The Newtown Jets picked up a big win against competition frontrunners Illawarra Cutters in an entertaining game in front of a big home crowd at Henson Park.

Newtown flew out of the gates early piling on the tries, which saw the Cutters chasing the game from the early outsets. The victory see’s Newtown just outside the top eight with the Cutters now in danger of losing touch with the leading sides.

The game couldn’t have started worse for the Jets with Illawarra finding touch off the kick-off, however they failed to take advantage and immediately the Jets capitalized.

Daniel Mortimer who was a late inclusion into the side crossed for two quick tries and the pain wasn’t about to stop for Illawarra.

Jonathon Reuben found the line twice and debutant Willis Meehan barged over as well giving his team a 24-0 lead at the 25-minute mark.

As the half was dying out Geoff Daniela and then Yaw Kiti Glymin each broke the line giving the Cutters a roll on until centre Charly Runciman found the line to make the score 24-6 at the break.

The second half started the way the first did with the Jets crossing the stripe, this time through hard running Rhyse Martin extending the lead to 30-6. This saw Daniel Mortimer exit the field and not return for the remainder of the match.

Straight away the Cutters sprung into life with pint-sized fullback Adam Quinlan busting open the Jets defence and getting the ball to Daniela for a try. Minutes later we saw Runciman get through the Jets wall and Daniela again getting over to take the score to 30-16.

With the Cutters now looking the stronger side they were in again after Kyle Eather followed his own kick for a try under the posts to put Illawarra in the hunt at 30-22 with 15 minutes left.

Just as it looked like the Cutters were back in the match a series of errors let them down, the Jets played on this and Meehan was again over followed up quickly by half Arana Taumata to put the game out of reach at 42-22.

Daniel Mortimer was all class for the Jets, as was his halves partner Taumata and big Willis Meehan looks be a player to watch after splitting the defence open many times with strong busts.

Illawarra will be disappointed with the loss but backs Charly Runciman and Adam Quinlan produced a strong showing as did Craig Garvey with Illawarra looking better with him on the field.

Next weekend the Jets play at Allianz Stadium on Saturday when they take on Mounties while the Cutters will be at home on the Sunday when they host the Panthers.
