Former NSW VB Blues stars Luke Bailey, Matt Geyer and Anthony Laffranchi will come out of retirement on the Gold Coast on Saturday to mark the memory of a special rugby league fan.

In October of last year, Gold Coast girl Kymberlie Shepherd passed away in tragic circumstances whilst giving birth to her and fiancé Wayde Kelly’s first child Kyden, due to an extremely rare condition known as an Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE).

Both Kymmy and Wayde were tireless members of the rugby league community, spending much of their free time coaching, helping and/or playing at Gold Coast clubs Mullumbimby and Burleigh Heads, then later in London where together they were a driving force behind the success of ex-pat club The Hammersmith Hills Hoists RLFC.

To celebrate the life of Kymmy, raise awareness of AFE and lend a hand to Wayde and little Kyden, the Hills Hoists RLFC will be taking on a combined Gold Coast team for a charity game of rugby league on February 28 at Burleigh Bears JRLFC at Pizzey Park.

Joining in will be some big names from years past including Adrian Vowles, Quentin Pongia, Kevin Campion, Clinton Schifcofske, Clinton Toopi, Laffranchi and Geyer amongst others.

The day will be bolstered further with both Gold Coast Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga cup sides going head to head in a two highly anticipated and always exciting local derbies.

Following the match will be a sportsman’s dinner with charity auction at the Burleigh Leagues Club.

All are welcome to attend the match and enjoy what promises to be an exceptionally entertaining day of rugby league.

For those interested in attending the Sportsman’s dinner, bookings can be made at www.trybooking.com.au/gnts.
