Jarryd Hayne’s impressive start to his NFL career has seen the former NSW VB Blues fullback survive the first official cut at the San Francisco 49ers.
Hayne, who still has a nervous wait ahead of him before the 49ers name their final 53-man squad on September 5, was named in the team’s 75-man roster this morning.
"That would be one of the greatest sporting stories our country has witnessed."
After a notable debut against Houston, followed by another impressive display against Dallas, Hayne’s former mentor and current VB Blues coach Laurie Daley says he is confident the Dally M medallist will make the crucial cut.
“He’s going tremendously well. I think everyone here at New South Wales Rugby League couldn’t be prouder, as is the whole rugby league community,” Daley said.
“It’s a very special achievement. He’s been there for 12 months and to do what he’s done is a very special effort. We’re all wishing him the best.”
“Fingers crossed he can make it into the 53-man roster, because that would be such a huge thing for a guy here in Australia, who had a dream and left what he had here behind. He was an absolute superstar.”
The 49ers will play their fourth and final preseason fixture against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday (Friday 12pm AEST), before the team is decided the following day.
“He’s gone over there, tested himself, and if he’s to make it, that would be one of the greatest sporting stories our country has witnessed,” Daley said.
“From everything that I’ve seen I think he’ll make it. There’s a lot of upside in Jarryd and we’re really excited about getting behind not only Jarryd Hayne but the San Francisco 49ers.”
