If family genetics are anything to go by, the relative of Greg Inglis, William Lockwood, is in for a huge career.

Lockwood leads the NSW Indigenous Under-16s as captain for the first time, and he has plenty of wisdom and experience to gain from the NRL superstar, who he considers his uncle.

“My favourite player is my uncle, Greg Inglis,” Lockwood told NSWRL.com.au. “He’s my mum’s second cousin but they consider each other as brother and sister.”

Despite representing NSW against the Queensland Under-16s Murri side as the curtain raiser to this Saturday night’s All Stars clash, Lockwood and the Queensland icon share a tight bond.

“Every now and then, we have chats,” Lockwood said. “Greg always tells me to work hard, push for the team, and always do what I need to do.”

It’s Lockwood’s second game for the NSW Indigenous Under-16s, earning the honour to captain the side.

“It’s the best thing to ever happen to me in my footy career,” Lockwood said.

“It means a lot to be captain of the side. I was in the side last year and to become the captain; I’m proud of myself and proud for all my family back home.

“I take it as a big privilege to lead them around the field and provide what I can and receive what the boys need to help me with.”

Hopefully it’s just the start of a prosperous career for Lockwood who, originally from Kempsey, moved to the Gold Coast to pursue a move with the Titans.

This week as captain in camp has served as a vital learning experience for Lockwood with one of the greatest Origin legends and NSW VB Blues coach Laurie Daley speaking to the side ahead of their huge clash on the big stage.

“To hear from one of the legends of the game was a privilege,” Lockwood said. “To hear what to do, what I need to do and what I’m looking forward for to be in the NRL.”

Lockwood has relished the role and its responsibility aiming to carry it with him for the rest of his career.

“My goal is to make the NRL,” Lockwood said. “I want to be a leader both on and off the field.”

The Indigenous All Stars meet the World All Stars in the Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars clash at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, 13 February. Some seats are still available – details at NRL.com/tickets.
