More than 600 women and teenage boys and girls across 46 teams will converge on Western Sydney this Saturday (8 October) for one of Australia’s biggest multicultural Rugby League carnivals, the ninth NSWRL Harmony Cup.

Australian-based heritage teams from nations including Lebanon, Malta the Cook Islands, Africa United and Australian Indigenous communities, will travel from all parts of NSW and Victoria to compete in the annual tournament.

The Harmony Cup, a celebration of cultural diversity, is a platform for non-elite players to showcase their skills and build healthy relationships through Rugby League. Graduates from past Harmony Cups include Roosters forward Kane Evans and Panthers flyer Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.

Former Kiwi Internationals and current NRL ambassadors Joe Galuvao and Bronson Harrison will be in attendance to celebrate Rugby League's proud cultural diversity.

NSWRL Chief Executive, David Trodden, said the Harmony Cup, run in conjunction with the NRL, is an outstanding tournament that helps develop talent as well as bring out the best in Rugby League.

“It’s something NSWRL and the NRL look forward to every year and hosting an event like the Harmony Cup is a huge honour,” Trodden said.

“This competition is a wonderful advertisement for our game. The tournament is about celebrating cultural diversity and it’s just another reason why Rugby League is truly a great sport for all.

“Tournaments like the Harmony Cup produce some extraordinary talent and I encourage everyone to get to St Marys and The Kingsway this Saturday.”

For the first time the Harmony Cup will feature four competitions – Under-16 boys, Under-18 boys, Open Women and Under-16 girls.

The Open women’s and Under-16 girls competitions feature the likes of Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands, while the Under-16s and 18s Boys include Lebanon, Africa United, Malta, the Philippines and countries from the Pacific Nations.

The Open women's Pacific Nations countries (Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands) will use this Saturday's tournament as a stepping-stone to next week's World Cup Qualifiers in St Marys.

The Harmony Cup will feature a range of family-friendly activities and attractions including cultural performances, face painting, a jumping castle and a DJ.
