As far as impressive feats go, Mounties achieving minor premiership status in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW, the Ron Massey Cup, and the Sydney Shield for the 2016 season is a truly remarkable club-wide effort.
Not since the St George Dragons in 1985 has a club topped the table in all three grades, highlighting the significance of the achievement.
They were not done there, however, Mounties Sydney Metropolitan Women's Rugby League also finished in top spot in their competition, completing an unbelievable quadruple.
While the women’s side was unable to reach the decider in the SMWRL, all three of their male counterparts were, with the unprecedented opportunity to take the title in all three senior male competitions. Add in that NRL affiliate the Canberra Raiders were still alive in that weekend of the top grade and it was a vital time for the entire Mounties-Raiders system.
Unfortunately for Raiders and Mounties fans, only one side would win that weekend; Mounties took out the Ron Massey Cup with a 36-16 win over the St Marys Saints. The Raiders would also fall agonisingly short of an NRL Grand Final berth due to a 14-12 loss to the Melbourne Storm, but the efforts of all teams are to be celebrated regardless. Such success is hard to come by in one competition, let alone five, and the Raiders-Mounties partnership will be hopeful of going even further in 2017.
