Round 3 of the SG Ball Cup featured both close finishes and heavy defeats, as the top teams began to pull ahead of the rest of the competition.

In a wet-weather affair at Morry Breen Oval, the Central Coast Roosters narrowly overcame the North Sydney Bears 16-12, while the Panthers defeated the Sydney Roosters 20-12 in Sydney's west. The Cronulla Sharks beat the South Sydney Rabbitohs 30-24, placing them alongside the Magpies, Panthers, Tigers and Roosters as undefeated so far.

The Illawarra Steelers well and truly overcame the Parramatta Eels 54-26, but it was far from the highest-scoring encounter of the weekend. At Perth's Lark Hill Sportsplex, the Newcastle Knights put forward a huge display against the West Coast Pirates, defeating the home side 84-14. The tally of 98 points in 70 minutes is unlikely to be broken this season.
