Earlier this year at the New South Wales Rugby League Season Launch, it was announced that the NSWRL, in partnership with the Starlight Children’s Foundation, would be launching the VB NSW Cup Wish League.
It was our aim to raise enough money to grant three magical Starlight Wishes to transform the lives of sick kids and their families.
For the past six weeks or so, we have encouraged clubs and supporters to dig deep and donate and they most certainly have answered the call.
Last Saturday at Sportinget Stadium, following the conclusion of the Bears Vs Bulldogs VB NSW Cup fixture, NSWRL Chairman, Dr George Peponis OAM, proudly presented the Starlight Children’s Foundations, Rebecca Oxenbould, a cheque for $24'000 with more donations still coming in since then.
This total should now see the Starlight Children’s Foundation be able to grant five wishes to some very deserving young children.
NSWRL Chairman, Dr George Peponis OAM, took great pleasure in knowing that the Wish League has more than accomplished what it had set out to achieve.
"It was great to see all the NSW Cup sides get behind this partnership,” Peponis said.
"To be able to exceed our expectations with regards to the fundraising was heartening for me. The money raised will grant wishes for five children and their families. That’s an important result for us as an organisation, but an even more important one for those families.”
The NSWRL would like to thank all of those who have made contributions to the Wish League over the last couple of months, however it would be remiss of us not to make special mention of Olivia Herman.
Olivia is the daughter of the Cronulla Sharks VB NSW Cup Coach Tony Herman, and Olivia and the rest of 'Team Livvy' raised a staggering $12'000 by taking a donation bucket around the crowd at games as well as encouraging people and businesses to log on and make donations on-line.
Once again, congratulations to ‘Team Livvy’ and all of those who have made donations that will be used to make a difference in a young child’s life.
