Two teams down, only six teams remain standing for the VB NSW Cup.
It was a disappointing end for the Manly Sea Eagles and North Sydney Bears who were eliminated after Week One of the finals. The Bears’ fairytale came to a heart-breaking finish with a crushing 22-4 loss to the Canterbury Bulldogs. The Bulldogs took a 10-0 lead at halftime before a gutsy second-half defensive effort against a Bears side that never gave up.
The Newcastle Knights were too good for Manly, running out convincing 45-6 winners. The Knights took firm control of the match to lead 22-6 at halftime before an emphatic second half, scoring 30 unanswered points.
Meanwhile, the Wyong Roos and Mounties are just 80 minutes away from the Grand Final following victory to advance to the Week Three Preliminary Finals.
Mounties put on a second-half clinic to destroy the Warriors for a 43-10 triumph. Leading 18-10 at the break, Mounties scored 25 unanswered points, forcing the Warriors into a do-or-die elimination final against the Bulldogs on Sunday.
The Roos carried their strong form with a 28-10 win over the Penrith Panthers. Omar Slaimankhel was superb, scoring the last try to seal the result. The Roos enjoy the week off as the Panthers face the Knights in a huge rematch of last year’s Grand Final.
Do yourself a favour this Sunday – make sure you’re at Kogarah for two great games of footy. The VB NSW Cup Finals Series is heating up – and there’s no better place to be than at the game.
