Former NSW captains including Ray Price, Gavin Miller, Danny Buderus, Ben Elias and current coach Laurie Daley came together at ANZ Stadium today, one week before the man to lead the VB Blues for the 2017 series and beyond is picked.
The past captains are ready to usher in the next leader of the NSW Origin side - and among those interviewed, it appeared to be Boyd Cordner who was the popular vote.
"Boyd Cordner. Without a doubt, no hesitation," Benny Elias tells NSWRL.com.au. "Ticks all the boxes, terrific ambassador off the football paddock.
"When you’re looking for a captain you look for a bloke who’s passionate, about leading by example and there’s no one better that Boyd."
The sentiments were echoed by fellow former captains Gavin Miller, Brad Fittler and Danny Buderus.
"Cordner has certainly put his hand up yesterday (in the Roosters' dominant 48-10 win over the Eels), led the Roosters with great passion and pride," Miller says. "He’s a good candidate and he’s certainly a good leader."
"Just everything about him, he just seems to show leadership," Fittler adds. "He’s got a really strong character - that’s what we need."
Buderus agreed with the suggestion of Cordner, pointing out that he is a highly likely selection for a long period of time.
"If they’re going to go a new way in a new direction of leadership, (they) may as well give it to someone that’s going to be there for a good, considerable amount of time," Buderus says. "Boyd’s still young and plays with his actions a lot and he’s one definitely that the players will follow."
The next captain of the NSW VB Blues will be announced along with the entire Origin I side next Monday evening.
