Former Manly Co-Captain and NSW State of Origin Representative Jason King has been appointed to the role of the NRL's General Manager of Elite Competitions.

The newly created role, reporting to Head of Football Brian Canavan, will see Mr King lead and develop the game's elite competitions through football operations, medical, elite programs and targeted football programs.

The role will see Mr King work closely with Clubs, States, representative teams, coaches, players and the game’s football committees.

"Jason is a well-respected and highly-regarded member of the Rugby League family so it is wonderful from our perspective that he will be in this role," Mr Canavan said.

"He brings with him a very unique skill set – with experience and knowledge in law, business and the commercial areas, while also knowing what it takes to be an experienced player in our game’s elite competitions."

Mr King represented NSW in the 2010 and 2011 State of Origin series and was a co-captain for Manly during a career in which he played 217 matches for the Sea Eagles and 22 matches for Northern Eagles.

He has a Bachelor of Laws as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration, and has completed his practical legal training with a view to being admitted to the Supreme Court of NSW towards the end of 2017.

"I'm looking forward to ensuring the game delivers the best possible spectacle, while also continuing to support our players, the coaches and the Clubs, providing them all with the best possible conditions to do what they do best," Mr King said.

"I'm deeply passionate about the game and I certainly feel privileged to have the opportunity to contribute to it as an administrator."

Mr King, previously been the NRL's Government Partnerships and Commercial Projects Manager, will begin his new role in late August.
