Penrith District Junior Rugby League have celebrated a successful opening weekend in their all-girls junior competition, with more than 150 girls from 14 teams participating in the historic first round of play.
The first of its kind, the competition’s commencement saw matches played from the under-6s to under-18s.
2017 Penrith Panthers Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup representative Isabella Lealaiauloto was on hand to lend her experience of the game, coaching the St Marys under-12s to a victory over the Mt Druitt Lions.
“It is always exciting getting to watch these girls play, and to be a part of the bright future of the game,” Lealaiauloto told NSWRL.com.au.
“The competition will only continue to grow, and we’re hoping the competition continues to inspire young girls to pursue their talents.”
Penrith Junior League Manager Phil Cummings praised the involvement from players and officials following the day’s play.
“The emphasis is on fun, fun for all. It has been a wonderful day out, the girls were smiling, they definitely enjoyed themselves,” Cummings said.
“Everyone – players, coaches and trainers – upheld the great spirit of the game.”
