Casualty ward: Blues count cost of horror round

The injury concerns for the Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues have continued following the news Brisbane centre Jack Bird will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury while Melbourne Storm centre Curtis Scott will be sidelined for the next three months with a broken foot.

Bird was forced off the field during the Brisbane Broncos 26-10 win over Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night with the club later confirming he had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Scans confirmed on Monday that Scott had fractured his foot during the Storm’s 64-10 demolition of the Parramatta Eels at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues coach Fittler said on Sunday he wasn't hitting the panic button but had some big decisions to make with just two NRL games left before the Origin opener in Brisbane on June 5.

Compounding the issue is Brisbane’s James Roberts is playing reserve grade, Penrith’s Waqa Blake was dropped for disciplinary reasons while Newcastle’s Jesse Ramien has had a slow start to the season.

Asked if he may be forced to pick a player out of position in his backline, Fittler told Nine Network: “I am not sure yet.

“We still have a couple of weeks to go. Hopefully we have got some outside backs coming back.

“There is an opportunity there for someone but they (options) are dwindling with Curtis Scott and Jack Bird out and some playing reserve grade too.”

The Sydney Roosters could be without captain Boyd Cordner for Friday night’s match against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium after he was heavily concussed against Canberra Raiders on Sunday.

Roosters winger Daniel Tupou is expected to play after being cleared of a neck injury against the Raiders as is centre Latrell Mitchell who left the field with a groin problem but returned to finish the game.

Newcastle Knights five-eighth Connor Watson left the field with a foot problem against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs but the club has indicated he is still a chance of lining up to face St George Illawarra Dragons on Sunday.
