The NSWRL is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one its life members, Brian Kurtz.
Kurtz was the founding chairman of the Illawarra Steelers and played a key role in the club being admitted to the NSWRL competition in 1982. He held the position until 1989.
Kurtz forged a career as a front rower for the Western Suburbs club in the Illawarra competition and was part of the premiership-winning side in 1964 that also included Rugby League Immortal and NSW Hall of Famer, Bob Fulton.
He was later made a life member of the Steelers, a life member of the NSWRL and a Rugby League representative on the NSW Leagues Club board.
“Brian certainly played his part in establishing the steering committee to approach the NSWRL to gain entry into the competition,” NSWRL director Bob Millward.
“He fought hard for Illawarra’s recognition and was very dedicated as both a player and administrator.
“Brian will be sorely missed and the NSWRL would like to pass on our condolences to his family and his friends.”
