Rookie Report: Standouts from Cessnock Cup trial

We always have an eye on the future at the Knights.

Each week the nib Newcastle Knights will identify the best performers from the NSW Cup competitions so the supporters can get a feel for who is consistently performing in the lower grades.

These are the players to keep an eye out for as they climb the ranks or knock on the door for a future NRL debut.

Dominic Young

He was the name on everybody's lips at Cessnock Sports Ground, with the towering young Englishmen impressing in the centres.

Young, who was given an early-mark at half-time, finished his 40-minute stint with a try and powerful assist, catching the eyes of both the 3000-strong crowd and the coaching staff.

"We've all been waiting to see big Dom, obviously," NSW Cup Coach Andrew Ryan said.

"It was really good to see him play, and he should get a lot of confidence out of that."

Young: First hit out, improvement areas and that try

Dylan Lucas

Lucas was another impressive performer, hitting the paddock in place alongside Young in the centres.

The young gun finished with a powerful try, racing 40 metres to score late in the game.

"Dylan's one of our part-timers who got his opportunity over the Summer to train with the NRL squad," Ryan said.

"I thought he was super impressive today."

Lucas: Stepping up, six again rule and living with Bradman

Harry van Dartel

A Dubbo Junior with stacks of potential, van Dartel was given a chance to impress off the bench in the second half.

A fullback who spent time with the Canberra Raiders and South Newcastle, van Dartel produced an impressive stint when he hit the park for the final quarter.

"He's another part-timer wearing the Knights colours," Ryan said.

"He had a massive crack as well."
