South Sydney kick off title defence

Reigning Jersey Flegg Cup champions the South Sydney Rabbitohs are off the mark in 2021 after a convincing 30-16 win over the Sydney Roosters in Round 3.

The Roosters were first on the scoresheet with an early try to fullback Moala Graham-Taufa before Rabbitohs winger Michael Mitsias hit back in the 20th minute. The visitors soon scored a second through form half Ronald Volkman but South Sydney returned with two more converted tries for a 16-12 halftime lead.

The Rabbitohs scored a third unanswered try when newest recruit and former Rooster Lathan Hutchison-Walters crossed in the 40th minute, followed by two more four-pointers to wingers Zane Bijorac and Thomas Ball on the way to a 14-point win.

Blacktown victorious in low-scoring affair

The Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles have recorded their first win of the 2021 Ron Massey Cup with a 16-10 victory against Cabramatta on Sunday afternoon.

Front row forward Peni Misinale forced his way over try line in the 13th minute to open the scoring for Blacktown in what was the only four-pointer of the first half.

The early exchanges of the second half led to another try for the Sea Eagles through No.17 Lufusi Vea Tapaatoutai with a quick reply from Cabramatta winger Josh Kingham just three minutes later. The Sea Eagles regained their two-try buffer when Sione Fonua scored in the 58th minute before a late second try to Kingham, which wasn’t enough to overcome the home side.

Late flurry sees Wentworthville to victory

The Wentworthville Magpies have secured an unlikely victory over the East Campbelltown Eagles in Round 3 of the Sydney Shield.

Trailing 30-16 with 13 minutes remaining in the contest, the Magpies produced three converted tries in eight minutes to take the lead in the late stages.

Magpies winger Obeid Karwhin finished with a brace of tries – including the match-winner – while halfback James Boustani kicked five from six conversions in their 34-30 win.
