Silktails leave comeback too late against Mounties

The Kaiviti Silktails were beaten 24-16 by Mounties in their Round 13 Ron Massey Cup clash on Sunday at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

It was the home side who kicked off the scoring through Ryan Jeffery, who crashed over the line to give Mounties the early lead.

The Silktails then responded with a try of their own after winger Osea Natoga collected the ball from an in-goal kick, before improving his position to touch down near the posts.

Both sides were going tit-for-tat in the opening half, with the Mounties scoring their second through a backline shift which finished in the hands of George Sukanaivalu.

Kaiviti answered back in almost similar fashion to give Natoga his second try of the afternoon.

A late first half try to Roman Ioelu put Mounties 14-10 ahead at the break.

There was no shortage of chances for both sides in the second half and Mounties were finally able to take an opportunity with just over 10 minutes remaining through David Soakai, who touched down in the corner.

A fifth try for Mounties came just six minutes later when Jamon Wormleaton weaved his way through the Silktails’ line to extend his side’s lead to 24-10.

The Silktails were able to score a consolation try through Natoga, who secured his hattrick by running 80 metres to score. It was too little, too late, however, as the visitors fell short by eight points at Aubrey Keech Reserve.
