NSWRL and The Star support Sky Blues off-field development

The NSWRL and The Star have teamed up to provide a unique opportunity for the Westpac NSW Sky Blues to ensure the sky’s the limit off the field through a bespoke development program, focusing on brand education, employment and mentorship.

Throughout the historic three-game Ampol State of Origin Series in 2024, the 20-member squad will undertake the NSWRL Women’s Development Program supported by The Star in a series of workshops while in camp.

They will learn tools to identify, communicate and activate their personal brand in and beyond sport, followed by two further stages providing potential employment opportunities and mentorship.

The program was created through a collaboration between Westpac NSW Sky Blues Coach Kylie Hilder, athlete brand education specialists, the Brand Builders, and NSWRL commercial partner The Star.

NSWRL Chief Commercial Officer Jodie Cross said a key outcome of the program was to ensure the Sky Blues had every opportunity to finish their Rugby League playing careers in a batter place career-wise than when they started.

“The sky’s the limit for these players on the field, but equally we want them to develop the skills and confidence to excel off the field,” Cross said.

“We are incredibly grateful to The Star for their investment in the future of the Sky Blues players and the opportunities not only to learn to leverage their brand, but also with access to employment options and mentoring.”

Chief Executive Officer of The Star Sydney Janelle Campbell said: “The Star is enormously proud to further expand its support of the NSW Sky Blues.

“Much like the commitment of the women’s game to take the Origin to a three-game series, a lot of work and determination has gone into bringing this program to life.

“The Star has a key focus on gender equity so it’s our pleasure to help provide development, skill and career opportunities for those talented athletes once they step off the field.

“We look forward to a time when some of those players may join us here at The Star.”

Following the brand education workshops, a number of players will be provided employment opportunities at The Star, aligned with their skill set and desired career development outcomes.

The Star will use their Graduate Program as a guide to develop tailored working and learning opportunities and ensure flexible working conditions.

The mentorship stage will be twofold, providing industry and skill specific mentors for athletes to foster career development outside of the game; and developing athletes and providing them with opportunities to mentor others.
