Knights and Bears looking for consistency

The NSWRL holds its first Regional Magic Round at Tamworth’s Scully Park this weekend with five Round 10 games from The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, and six matches from across the local Group 4 men’s and women’s competitions. Here’s a preview from the second of five NSW Cup matches at Scully Park.

Newcastle Knights v North Sydney Bears – 3pm Saturday 10 May

The North Sydney Bears and Newcastle Knights are both trying to find consistency as The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup approaches the midway point of the 2025 season.

The Bears have reached great heights in recent competitions making the Grand Final for the past two years. But they currently sit in ninth spot on the ladder with three wins from eight games.

They started with three straight losses, then bounced back with three straight wins.

But the Bears have lost to Canberra Raiders and the Warriors over the past fortnight and will be eager to turn their fortunes around.

North Sydney will look to players like winger Matt Komolafe, who is their top try-scorer with six from six matches, or skipper and front-rower Ben Talty who makes an average 45 post-contact metres per game and has scored five tries himself.

The Knights are in 11th position with two victories but ended a six-match losing streak last weekend with a 26-24 win over 2023 Premiers, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, from the more accurate kicking of Connor Votano.

Newcastle have an impressive halves pairing in NRL players Tyson Gamble and Jackson Hastings (pictured above: NRL photos) with NSW Under 19s State of Origin hooker and captain Matt Arthur at No.9.

He made his NRL club debut for the Knights in Round Six this year, after playing three games for his previous club Parramatta Eels.
