The NSWRL is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of True Blue Angus ‘Gus’ Miller, aged 99.

A Group 7 Rugby League Life Member, Miller’s decorated career spanned 15 seasons starting with his first-grade debut as a 16-year-old for Berry Magpies in the South Coast premiership.

Miller (pictured above, front row, three in from left) made his first appearance for NSW against Queensland in 1946, and went on to represent his state on two more occasions in 1948 and 1949.

He was part of three premiership-winning Magpies teams in 1952-53 and 1954, captaining the ’54 side. Miller also represented Combined Country against City eight times, and made multiple appearances for Southern Division against a host of international touring teams.

“Gus was not only one of the greatest players of his era, but also one of the most popular,” said John O’Dwyer OAM, Group 7 Historian and Life Member.

Miller became a lifelong friend of many during his career, be it teammates or opponents, a true mark of what made him a much-admired figure in the South Coast Rugby League community.

A funeral service will be held in his hometown of Berry on Tuesday 2 September, Miller’s 100th birthday.

The NSWRL extends its condolences to Miller’s family and friends.
