New-look Rams eye three-peat

The Western Rams will look to their young guns when the Women’s Country Championships kicks off tomorrow (Saturday 14 February) as they aim to chase an historic third title in the competition.

Newly appointed coach Kaitlyn Mason said the Rams will field a predominately under 21 squad this season, with only Lilly Baker and Kiara Sullivan remaining from the back-to-back premiership winning teams.

“We have taken a new approach. It is going to be a new-look side for the Rams which is very exciting,” Mason said.

“Those girls that have been a part of that group over the last couple of years have really set the bar for where we need to be as a team.

“We have girls travelling up to two or three hours to get to training each week. The way that they have approached every session and the bond they have built has been really pleasing. It is going to be a very exciting year.”

Mason said she was thrilled to take on the role as Rams coach for the Open Age team after their dominant campaigns in 2024 and 2025, including a 46-6 grand final victory over the Northern Rivers Titans last year.

“It was a bit of a surprise when they asked if I wanted to jump on board this year and coach the open girls but I am really excited,” Mason said.

“Taking that next step into women’s has been very exciting and one I have grabbed with two hands.

“We have put a great bunch of girls together and I am very excited to see how they tackle this year’s campaign.”

The Men’s Country Championships, which will be played in a knockout format, will kick off on Saturday February 28.
