The NSWRL was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of long-serving Junee Diesels patron Leo McCarthy, aged 88.
A Life Member of both the Diesels and Group 9 Rugby League, Leo provided a warm and welcoming environment for junior Rugby League players from across the region.
A father of nine, Leo gave 30 years of service to the Diesels committee following his retirement as a player. He will be sadly missed by the club in its 100th year.
During the 1990s and 2000s, Leo twice served as Group 9 Secretary across 15 years. Shortly after retiring from the role, he was awarded Life Membership of Group 9 in 2010.
As Secretary of the Diesels, Leo played a part in one of the club’s golden eras of Premiership success, including the 1986 trilogy. The club backed up its 1985 Premiership trifecta in Under 16s, Under 18s and Reserve Grade by claiming titles the following year in Under 18s, Reserve Grade and First Grade.
True Blue and Junee Diesels player Laurie Daley paid tribute to McCarthy’s contribution.
“It’s a great loss,” Daley said. “He was a wonderful man that contributed so much, not only for the Diesels but the community.
“Leo was one of those blokes who always dug in and got the job done.
“He did a lot for the footy club, he did a lot for the town, and he was very passionate about Rugby League. He was a passionate Junee Diesels man through and through.”
The NSWRL extends its sincere condolences to Leo’s many family and friends.
