Game Summary
Melbourne Storm claimed their first victory in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, defeating the Newtown Jets 20-12 at Seabrook Reserve in front of a passionate home crowd under sunny conditions in Melbourne's north.
The Jets came in with confidence after a convincing 38-16 win over the Panthers in Round Two, while the Storm were eager to right the wrongs of consecutive defeats to the Eels and Dragons. Both sides shared the early ball with neither able to break the defensive stalemate through the opening exchanges.
The deadlock was broken just before half-time when Storm hooker Gabriel Satrick showcased his footwork through the middle third before throwing a delicate grubber kick for fullback Hugo Peel, who acrobatically planted the ball down. Half-back Trent Toelau converted to give the Storm an 8–0 lead, with a penalty goal also going their way after sustained pressure on the Jets' line.
The Jets hit back early in the second half when Cathane Hill ran a smart line off a well-timed pass from Taj Ford, scoring his first NSW Cup try to drag his side back to within two points at 8-6 after Riley Pollard's successful conversion.
Storm back-rower Angus Hinchey then extended the lead with a strong solo effort, crashing through the Jets' right-edge defence to give the home side a converted try cushion at 14–6. The Jets refused to fold, with winger Kristian Dixon swooping on a loose ball to score a try and close the gap to two points.
The final stages were tense, with momentum swinging between both sides and the Jets threatening to take the lead. However, with the clock winding down, Toelau put the ball on a string for Hinchey to crash over for his second try of the afternoon, sealing a 20–12 victory and the Storm's maiden NSW Cup win for 2026.
Talking Points
Gabriel Satrick was the Storm's standout, controlling the pace of play from dummy-half with sharp footwork, dangerous running lines and two try assists. His arrival into the starting side proved a significant selection call.
The Jets' right-edge attack caused the Storm problems throughout, with Michael Gabrael and Kristian Dixon combining well. Dixon's opportunistic finish kept the visitors alive in the contest deep into the second half.
Discipline proved costly for both teams, but it was the Storm who capitalised better when penalties were gifted, converting pressure into points at crucial stages.
Key Moment
Gabriel Satrick's grubber kick for Hugo Peel just before half-time was the turning point. With the scoreboard locked at nil-all and the contest evenly poised, that moment of individual brilliance gave the Storm a lead they would not relinquish.
What's next?
The Storm will enjoy a well-earned week off to build on their first victory of the season. The Jets return to the field next week, travelling to Canberra to face the Raiders in what shapes as another tough NSW Cup assignment.
