Bears score convincing win to break Dragons' unbeaten run

Game Summary

The North Sydney Bears produced a superb all-round display to inflict the first defeat of the season on the St George Illawarra Dragons, running out 32-14 winners in Round Four of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Mick Cronin Oval in Gerringong on Saturday.

The Bears set the tone from the opening whistle, dominating field position and territory to race to an 18-4 lead midway through the first half. Matt Stimson opened the scoring in the corner after slick hands through the middle, before Ammaron Gudgeon strolled through untouched following a series of set restarts that left the Dragons scrambling. Captain Coby Thomas then barged over from close range to make it three tries in 25 minutes.

Kieran Hayman was flawless from the tee, converting all three from various angles including two from the sideline into a stiff breeze. The Dragons, weakened by several players travelling with the NRL squad to the Gold Coast, struggled to generate any attacking momentum in the opening quarter.

Halfback Kade Reed dragged the Dragons back into the contest with two moments of individual brilliance before the break. A pinpoint 40/20 kick set up Stanley-Traill's first try in the corner, cutting the deficit to 18-10 at half-time and giving the home side a lifeline.

Any hopes of a second-half comeback were quickly extinguished. Fullback Jake Toby sliced through the Dragons' defence just two minutes after the restart to restore the 14-point buffer at 24-10. Toby was electric all afternoon, beating defenders at will and creating opportunities with his running game.

Reed continued to probe and found Traill again with a trademark inside ball to reduce the margin to 10, but North Sydney responded immediately through Abiarthur Toi Tuilaepa to push the lead back out to 30-14. Hayman added a penalty goal late to cap a perfect day from the boot, finishing five from five with conversions and adding two points from in front.

The Bears' second-phase play and offloading game troubled the Dragons all afternoon, while their back three of Toby, Stimson and Tuilaepa were outstanding in both attack and under the high ball.

Talking Points

Jake Toby was outstanding at fullback for the Bears. His footwork, acceleration and ability to make metres from nothing was a constant headache for the Dragons' defence.

Kade Reed was the best player on the field for the Dragons, producing a 40/20 kick, two try assists to Stanley-Traill and several dangerous runs. His goal-kicking was the only blemish, finishing one from three in difficult conditions.

Kieran Hayman's goal-kicking was superb, converting five from five including two sideline attempts into the wind. He also contributed in general play with smart tactical kicking. Coby Thomas also led from the front for North Sydney, scoring a try, making big tackles and acting as a third playmaker out of the back-row.

The Dragons were hampered by several late changes as players were called up to travel with the NRL squad. It showed in their cohesion, particularly in the opening quarter when they struggled to generate field position.

Key Moment

Jake Toby's try just two minutes into the second half was key. After the Dragons had clawed back to 18-10 at the break and appeared to have momentum, the Bears turned a shaky start to the half into an 80-metre try through Toby's individual brilliance, restoring the 14-point margin and deflating the home crowd.

What's Next?

The Bears face arch rivals Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at 4 Pines Park on Saturday in Round Five, while the Dragons have the bye and will welcome the extra time to regroup.
