Dogs hand Knights first defeat in thriller at Belmore

Game Summary

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs held off a spirited Newcastle Knights fightback to claim a thrilling 32-28 victory in Round Four of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday.

The Bulldogs dominated the opening quarter with suffocating defence and relentless forward pressure, pinning the Knights inside their own half for long stretches. Alex Conti controlled proceedings in the halves with a sharp kicking game, and fullback Taye Cochrane struck first pouncing on a loose ball after chasing his own kick to open the scoring.

Newcastle hit back through a classy cut-out pass from halfback Matthew Hunter to send Marcus D'Acre on the left edge, levelling the scores at 6-6. But the Bulldogs quickly reasserted themselves as captain Logan Spinks finished off a slick set play initiated by a clever chip kick from Joseph Teaupa, before Louis Grossemy crashed through the line off a beautiful short ball from Conti to push the lead to 16-6.

A fortuitous try to Cooper Toy, who was on the spot after Logan Aoake fumbled Conti's high kick, extended the buffer to 22-6 before the Knights rallied late in the half. A well-placed kick from Mitch Henderson created pressure, and Hunter finished off a sharp passage of play to reduce the margin to 22-12 at half-time.

Newcastle came out firing in the second half with the wind at their backs. Francis Manuleleua crashed over from close range within minutes of the restart to close the gap to four points. But the Bulldogs struck a crucial blow when Tupper sliced through the defence and Jed Reardon carried the ball 50 metres upfield, setting up six points that swung momentum back Canterbury-Bankstown's way.

Zyon Maiu'u powered over from close range after a perfectly weighted grubber from Daniel O'Donnell to push the lead to 32-22. James Schiller then produced a spectacular leap to haul in Henderson's cross-field kick and score in the corner, before Manuleleua barged through tired defence to claim his second try and bring the Knights within four points with two minutes remaining.

Bronson Xerri's short restart was recovered by Newcastle but the Knights could not convert their final set, with a poor last-tackle option ending their hopes of a remarkable comeback.

Talking Points

Alex Conti was outstanding in just his second NSW Cup appearance, controlling the match with his kicking game, setting up tries and converting four goals. Still eligible for Jersey Flegg, the young half looks destined for bigger things.

Jack Underhill was immense in the middle for the Bulldogs, leading the way with his hit-ups and defensive work.

Newcastle's second-half revival showed the character of the then unbeaten side. With the wind behind them, they outscored the Bulldogs four tries to two but were ultimately undone by poor execution on their final attacking set.

The kicking game proved decisive in difficult conditions. A swirling breeze made goal-kicking and tactical kicking a challenge for both sides, but the Bulldogs managed it better across the 80 minutes.

Key Moment

With the score at 26-22 and the Knights building momentum, the Bulldogs recovered Bronson Xerri's short restart off the back of conceding a try. They worked the ball downfield and Maiu'u scored under the posts to restore a 10-point buffer at 32-22, taking the sting out of the Knights' comeback.

What's Next?

The Bulldogs are looking to make it three wins from four starts in Round Five when they face South Sydney Rabbitohs on Good Friday. The Knights take on Canberra Raiders at McDonald Jones Stadium on Good Friday.
