Spoils shared in Battle of the West

Game Summary

Parramatta Eels and Penrith Panthers produced a remarkable contest in Round Four of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, sharing the spoils in a 26-all draw at CommBank Stadium that delivered nine tries, multiple lead changes, a first-half hat-trick, a player sent off, and two missed penalty goals that ultimately shaped the result.

The Eels drew first blood inside the opening two minutes when Ronald Volkman sliced through the Panthers' defensive line and found Apa Twidle, who finished strongly to score without needing his winger in support. Twidle converted to make it 4-0 to Parramatta.

Penrith hit back through their left edge. After working field position through a penalty, Kalani Going and Jack Cole combined down that corridor, and Patrick Moimoi crossed for his second try of the season. Zakauri Clarke converted to hand the Panthers a 6-4 lead.

Clarke then showed his class under the posts to extend the advantage to 12-4 after a slick Kurt Falls line-break split the Eels' defence. Parramatta responded through Apa Twidle again, who backed up a Volkman dummy to score and convert his own try, trimming the deficit to two. Lorenzo Talataina followed with a try of his own to help the Eels to a 16-12 lead.

The action didn't stop there. Jack Cole crossed to level at 16-all after a brilliant decoy run from Clarke drew Parramatta's defenders, and Clarke's simple conversion gave Penrith the lead again at 18-16. Twidle then claimed a stunning first-half hat-trick on the right edge, benefiting once more from Volkman's creativity to put Parramatta back in front 22-18. A Panthers penalty for the Eels being offside at the scrum allowed Clarke to peg it back to 22-20 at half-time.

Jesse McLean opened the second half scoring four minutes in after gathering a stripped ball and racing to the corner. Clarke 's fifth conversion from five attempts put Penrith ahead 28-22. Twidle then completed one of the great individual NSW Cup performances, swooping on a Kalani Going kick on last tackle and outrunning the cover defence to score his fourth try, drawing level at 26-all after a missed conversion.

With 16 minutes remaining, a Panther was sent off for a high tackle that ignited a melee, leaving Penrith to see out the match with 12 men. Both sides created chances to win it but neither could land the decisive blow. The game ended 26-all after a desperate final set from the Panthers came to nothing, with both sides sharing the two competition points.

Talking Points

Twidle's four-try performance was the highlight of the evening. The fullback was a constant threat in attack and proved a reliable last line in defence, repeatedly outmanoeuvring Penrith's chasers and finishing with 18 points.

Zakauri Clarke was the Panthers' answer with five conversions from five attempts in the first half alone, keeping Penrith in the contest every time Parramatta threatened to pull away.

Ronald Volkman's influence was immense. The halfback created multiple try-scoring opportunities with his footwork and offload game, including the assist for Twidle's hat-trick try.

Key Moment

The standout moment came with just over 20 minutes remaining when Apa Twidle gathered a Panthers grubber in his own half and weaved his way through broken play before sprinting away for his fourth try, levelling the scores at 26-all. With both sides unable to strike the decisive blow before full-time, the try ultimately made sure the Eels would come away with a competition point.

What's Next?

The Eels are back at CommBank Stadium in Round Five for their Easter Monday clash with Western Suburbs Magpies, while the Panthers return to the very same venue on Good Friday to host the Melbourne Storm.
