Game Summary
Round Five of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup produced a gripping Easter Saturday derby at Lionel Watts Reserve, with the North Sydney Bears defeating the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 26-18 in front of a bumper crowd.
Manly drew first blood in the ninth minute when halfback Joey Walsh produced a stunning piece of individual brilliance, chipping the ball along the carpet before chasing it down himself and grounding over the try-line to lead 4-0.
The Bears hit back with two tries before half-time to take the lead. A long shift to the right sent Steadman over in the 18th minute. About 11 minutes later, Abiarthur Toi Tuilaepa finished in the corner to make it 8-6 in favour of North Sydney. Kieran Hayman was unable to convert either attempt.
The Sea Eagles levelled early in the second half when second-rower Hugo Hart, shifted to the centres for the match, crashed over in the right corner following a penalty that gave Manly a platform from the kick-off. Wilson's conversion attempt again fell short, leaving the scores locked at 8-8.
North Sydney re-established control with two more tries in a dominant stretch. Ammaron Gudgeon powered over through sheer force, and Josh Cook finished off an inspired offload from Thomas to push the Bears out to 18-8. Hayman finally added the extras for the second of those.
The Sea Eagles refused to lie down. Zaidas Muagututia broke the defensive line before putting Jackson Shereb over on the left wing, then Navren Willett strolled in unopposed on the right after a clever cross-field kick from Zach Dockar-Clay. Wilson converted Willett's try to close the gap to 18-18 with about nine minutes remaining.
Hayman steadied North Sydney's nerves by slotting a penalty goal from 46 metres to restore the Bears' lead at 20-18. Bayden Moran then sealed the win with the last play of the game, dotting down after a grubber kick from Jake Toby to complete a 26-18 victory.
Talking Points
Joey Walsh continues to be one of the most exciting young halves in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup. Two chip-and-chase efforts in the first half kept Manly in front early, and his left boot was a constant threat throughout the contest.
Coby Thomas was exceptional for North Sydney, combining tireless defence with key attacking contributions including the offload that led to Cook's try.
Key Moment
With the scores locked at 18-all and seven minutes remaining, Hayman stepped up to attempt a penalty goal from 46 metres. He nailed it to put North Sydney ahead 20-18, swinging momentum in the Bears' favour and setting up a tense final few minutes.
