Game Summary
βThe Penrith Panthers produced a dominant second-half display to run out convincing 42-10 winners over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Round Six of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Belmore on Friday night.
The Bulldogs made the ideal start, controlling field position in the opening exchanges and applying relentless pressure on the Penrith line. That persistence paid off when winger Cooper Toy crossed in the corner, with Sean O'Sullivan adding the extras from the sideline to give Canterbury an early 6-0 lead.
Penrith steadied and hit back through fullback Jaxen Edgar, who demonstrated sharp opportunism on two occasions. His first try came after a grubber kick bounced kindly, while his second arrived off the back of a loose pass by the Bulldogs, with Edgar cleaning up the scraps both times. Jack Cogger added a third try for Penrith before half-time when a deflected kick fell his way, with Zakauri Clarke converting two of the three tries to send the Panthers into the sheds with a 16-6 advantage.
The scoreline at the break told only part of the story. Canterbury's completion rate was alarmingly low throughout the first half, with the ball hitting the turf on multiple occasions in attacking positions. The Panthers, despite scoring three fortuitous tries, had capitalised every time the Bulldogs coughed up possession.
Opening the scoring in the second half was Cogger securing his double before the Bulldogs showed some fight early when winger Jethro Rinakama made a break down the left wing before passing inside to Logan Spinks who finished the superb sweeping left-edge movement to cut the deficit to 22-10, but O'Sullivan's sideline conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the Panthers two converted tries clear.
From that point, the floodgates opened. Patrick Moimoi β the nephew of former Parramatta Eels cult hero Fuifui β was the standout performer, bagging a hat-trick in the second half, all down Penrith's right edge. Jesse McLean also crossed after a simple scoot from dummy half, while Cogger's boot continued to direct traffic. Clarke finished with a sharp kicking display, converting several difficult sideline attempts.
The Bulldogs suffered further misery when prop Justin Matamua was sent to the sin bin for a high shot in the 10-minutes, leaving Canterbury to play out the remaining minutes a man short. The Panthers capitalised immediately, adding further tries to complete a commanding 42-10 victory.
It was a performance that will raise concerns for Bulldogs coach Jason Taylor, whose side now sits in danger of sliding out of the top eight heading into Round Seven. Penrith, meanwhile, remain unbeaten since Round Two and look every inch a premiership contender.
Talking Points
- A tale of two halves β the Bulldogs dominated possession and field position for the first 15 minutes but repeatedly failed to capitalise, with a poor completion rate ultimately costing them dearly as Penrith took control.
- Jaxen Edgar was a constant menace at the back for Penrith, finishing with a double and showing predatory instincts to pounce on both loose balls and broken play throughout the match.
- Patrick Moimoi announced himself emphatically with a second-half hat-trick, repeatedly finding space down Penrith's right edge and displaying an impressive combination of power and footwork.
- Sean O'Sullivan was lively for the Bulldogs, showing dangerous running game early, but Canterbury's error rate ultimately undermined his influence and left the halfback without sufficient ball in the second half.
Key Moment
While Canterbury trailed through the second half, they began showing genuine signs of a comeback when Bulldogs winger Jethro Rinakama executed a superb line-break before support play saw the Bulldogs score to close the gap. However, O'Sullivan's sideline conversion fell short, and Penrith regrouped immediately before the very next attacking set produced a try, effectively ending the contest.
