Race to glory begins as Junior Reps finals kick-off

The road to premiership glory begins for NSWRL Junior Representatives metropolitan competitions this weekend with the opening round of the 2026 finals series.

Over the next four weeks, seasons will be defined as the race for silverware begins.

With a top-eight format in play across the UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 17s Boys), UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s Men), Westpac Lisa Fiaola Cup (Under 17s Girls) and Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 19s Women), the stakes couldn’t be higher. The top four sides have a second chance, while those in the bottom half of the draw face immediate elimination.

The NSWRL Junior Reps program continues to be an elite pathway, delivering a glimpse of the future stars and next generation of Rugby League talent.

The continued growth of the women’s game has been a defining storyline in 2026 with the introduction of the Melbourne Storm into both the Westpac Lisa Fiaola and Tarsha Gale Cup competitions.

In their debut season, the Storm have already made an impact, charging into the Westpac Lisa Faiola Cup top eight and earning a shot to take out a premiership in their inaugural campaign.

In the Under 17s Girls competition, the benchmark has been set by Parramatta Eels and Newcastle Knights. Undefeated across the regular season and locked on 18 points, the two heavyweights loom as the teams to beat.

Parramatta, chasing back-to-back titles, will look to their strike weapon Havana Cook, whose 16 tries – including a four-try haul in their final round 34-8 victory – underline her game-breaking ability.

Meanwhile, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks will lean on the composure of halfback Tahli Weigand, the competition’s leading point-scorer, as they fight to keep their season alive in Week One when they face a sudden-death clash against the Storm.

The race is however far from a two-team affair. The competition’s inaugural premiers, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, remain firmly in the hunt while Central Coast Roosters have surged into the top four at the right time, adding further intrigue to an already stacked finals field.

The UNE Harold Matthews Cup narrative has shifted this season, with the previously dominant Warriors missing the finals, leaving the door open for a new premier in a competition that has rarely looked more even.

Newcastle Knights have been the standout, finishing the regular season undefeated to claim top spot. Close behind, Penrith Panthers continue to showcase their renowned talent production line, with halfback Jaylin Moran among the competition’s most impressive playmakers.

With attacking weapons spread across the competitions top-eight – including leading try scorers Zack Fitzgerald (Panthers), Amos Viiga (Panthers) and Benji Thompson (Knights) – the race to the title is wide open.

A similar storyline is unfolding in the Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup, where familiar rivals sit on top. Parramatta Eels and Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy once again lead the competition, echoing last year’s Grand Final. Parramatta claimed that decider and also won their regular season meeting in 2026. But, finals footy offers a fresh stage, and the Roosters will be eager to seek revenge under head coach True Blue Keeley Nizza.

Penrith Panthers and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks remain in the talks for the trophy in 2026, with players like Samantha Hanrahan (Panthers) and Ella Ropata (Sharks) have been instrumental for their sides.

The UNE SG Ball Cup may be the most open race of all. South Sydney Rabbitohs and Melbourne Storm lead the way on 17competition points, but reigning premiers Sydney Roosters are close behind and bring plenty of big game experience under coach True Blue Boyd Cordner.

The competition is primed for a thrilling finals run as leading try-scorers Melchizedek Nonu (Newcastle Knights) and Taj Alvarez (South Sydney Rabbitohs) are poised to put their attacking displays on show.
