Game Summary
St George Illawarra put on a dominant display in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup on Saturday, dismantling the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 52-12 at Wollongong. The Dragons, who entered Round Six in strong form with three wins from four starts, were simply too powerful for a Sea Eagles outfit still searching for consistency after a one-from-three start to the season.
The Dragons were applying sustained pressure on the Sea Eagles' try-line through the first ten minutes without reward. Manly's defence held firm early, but the dam broke in the 11th minute when halfback Kade Reed carved through the defensive line, linking with King-Togia before Tyler Peckham-Harris crossed under the posts. Kade Reed added the extras to make it 6-0.
The floodgates opened shortly after as the Dragons' backline clicked into gear. Kade Reed crossed for the second try following a slick combination through the hands, with King-Togia again the key playmaker. Reed converted. Things went from bad to worse when Jarrah Treweek turned provider, offloading around the corner for King -Togia to score and Reed to push the margin to 18-0
Reed himself crossed for a double, finishing off a sweeping passage of play from long range to extend the lead to 24-0. Tom Kirk then made it five tries before half-time after collecting a cut-out pass from Reed out wide. The lone bright spot for Manly came just before the interval when halfback Joey Walsh kicked in behind and Josh Feledy ran to score, with Clayton Faulalo kicking the conversion to make it 30-6 at half-time..
The second half followed a similar pattern. The Dragons again assumed control, and David Afu crashed over from close range to extend the advantage to 34-6. Captain Jacob Halangahu added another through sheer determination, bulldozing his way over despite several defenders in his path to make it 38-6.
Jacob Webster crashed over for the eighth try, and Loco Jnr Pasifiki Tonga delivered the exclamation mark with a powerful line-break in the final two minutes, steaming away from the cover defence to score under the posts and raise the half-century. Navren Willett crossed for Manly's second try late to add some respectability to the scoreline, with Faulalo converting.
The final score of 52-12 was a comprehensive statement of intent from the Dragons' NSW Cup outfit, with nine tries scored to two in what was arguably their most dominant performance of the season.
Talking Points
Kade Reed was the standout individual performer, finishing with a personal haul of 20 points — two tries and eight conversions from nine attempts. His support play, vision and kicking accuracy were consistently outstanding throughout the afternoon.
King-Togia was involved in virtually every threatening Dragons movement in the first half, creating tries seemingly at will with his sharp footwork and precise short-ball play off the ruck.
Manly's defensive fragility out wide was exposed, with five of the Dragons' nine tries originating well outside the Sea Eagles' 20-metre zone.
Key Moment
The turning point arrived midway through the first half when the Dragons scored their third try in the space of eight minutes. Reed finished off a sweeping team movement to make it 18-0, effectively ending Manly's hopes of mounting a contest. From that point, the Sea-Eagles were consigned to damage control.
What's Next?
The Dragons face South Sydney next weekend in a curtain-raiser to the NRL clash between the two sides at Allianz Stadium, looking to make it four wins from six outings.
