Knights hold off Magpies to snare Round Six win

Game Summary

The Western Suburbs Magpies and the Newcastle Knights served up a thrilling contest in Round Six of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday night, with the Knights ultimately prevailing 24-22 in a result that sends them to the top of the table.

The Magpies set the tone early scoring before the Knights had even touched the ball. From their very first set, Tristan Hope orchestrated a superb sequence of play that ended with Siale Fainga'a finishing in the corner after just three minutes. Javon Andrews missed the conversion, but Western Suburbs had every right to feel confident after that electric opening.

Newcastle hit back quickly with Marcus D'Acre crossing on the left edge to level the scores, and from that point the Knights took firm control. Kyle McCarthy barged over in the 18th minute before Cody Hopwood crashed through the middle, with Mitch Henderson converting to make it a 14-4 lead.

Western Suburbs rallied before half-time, with Fainga'a crossing for his second to close the gap to six points, and Andrews converting. But in the final act of an enthralling first half, a turnover gave Newcastle a golden opportunity and James Schiller sprinted away to score in the corner. The Knights led 18-10 at the break.

The Magpies came out firing in the second half. A sharp short ball from Andrews put Mitch Taotua over in the 45th minute, and the playmaker then converted his own assist to make it 18-16. The Magpies then went ahead for the first time since the opening try when Solomone Saukuru crossed for his first, with Andrews' boot pushing the lead to 22-18.

The Knights refused to lie down. Siteni Taukamo crossed to restore Newcastle's lead and Henderson's conversion gave them a 24-22 advantage with around 19 minutes remaining. What followed was an enthralling defensive battle, with both sides creating and repelling chances in equal measure.

In a frantic finish, the Magpies came desperately close to snatching victory but could not find the try-line. A knock-on in the dying seconds saw Newcastle run out the clock to clinch a two-point victory that lifts them to first place on The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup ladder.

Talking Points

Andrews was outstanding in defeat, setting up multiple tries and finishing with three conversions from four attempts. His short ball and game management were a cut above.

Schiller continues to be a match-winner for Newcastle. His key first-half try on the stroke of half-time was his seventh from five games.

The Knights' ability to absorb pressure and find answers under the pump underlined their credentials as genuine title contenders. They have now won five of six games, with their only loss coming against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Round Four.

Key Moment

Schiller's try on the stroke of half-time was the defining moment of the match. The Magpies fought back to within six points and were threatening to level the scores or take the lead, but a turnover from an error allowed McCarthy to find Schiller in space. He shrugged off a defender and coasted to the in-goal to give the Knights a crucial buffer that helped them to an eventual win.

What's Next?

The Knights will carry enormous confidence into Round Seven when they face the fifth-placed Sydney Roosters. The Magpies have a bye next week before returning to action on Anzac Day against Canberra Raiders at Lidcombe Oval.
