Eels produce hard-fought victory in second win of the season

Game Summary

The Parramatta Eels claimed a hard-fought 24-18 victory over the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in a thrilling Round Eight clash of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at 4 Pines Park on Sunday.

The Eels drew first blood when centre Arza Nanva crossed in the opening exchanges. Joseph Nohra's conversion attempt from the touchline fell short, leaving Parramatta with a four-point lead.

Manly hit back emphatically, scoring three tries in quick succession to turn the game on its head. A determined effort from dummy-half levelled the scores, before second-rower Hugo Hart crossed for his side's second. Five-eighth Tex Hoy then added a third, stepping inside his man and striding away to give the Sea Eagles a 12-4 advantage. No conversions were successful, keeping the door open for the Eels.

Parramatta refused to fold as prop Zach Visconti crashed over from close range, and Nohra nailed the extras to close the gap to two at half-time. Winger Richard Penisini then scored in the corner just before the break to hand the Eels a 14-12 lead going into the sheds.

The second half opened as an arm-wrestle, before Hoy produced a stunning 70-metre intercept run midway through the half to restore Manly's two-point advantage. Wilson converted to make it 18-14, but Parramatta were not done.

Penisini collected a gem of a pass from Brad Avery to score his second try in the right corner, and Nohra's conversion sent the Eels back in front 20-18. The wing sensation then completed his hat-trick with an acrobatic finish in the 68th minute, assisted by Bobby Miller and Avery, to push the lead to 24-18. Nohra's conversion attempt went wide, but the six-point buffer proved enough.

Manly pressed hard in the final minutes, coming agonisingly close on several occasions, but the Eels defence held firm. A forward pass ruling against the Sea Eagles in the dying stages extinguished their last real hope, and the Eels ran down the clock to secure a 24-18 victory.

Talking Points

Joey Walsh was the standout for the Sea Eagles, threatening with both his running game and left-boot kicking.

Richard Penisini was the match-winner for Parramatta. The winger's hat-trick - a try just before half-time and two more in the second half - proved the difference between the two sides. His ability to finish in tight spaces was a highlight of the game.

Nathan Brown was a workhorse for Parramatta in the middle, consistently making big metres and setting the platform for his side's attack.

Key Moment

After Tex Hoy's intercept try in the 60th minute, Parramatta's quick response with Penisini's second try and Nohra's conversion, swinging the match back in the Eels' favour and setting up the grandstand finish.

What's Next?

The Eels return home to the James Hardie Centre of Excellence to host the Warriors in Round Nine, while the Sea Eagles begin a tough away stretch travelling to Parker Street Reserve to face Penrith Panthers.
