Game Summary
The Parramatta Eels made history at the Kellyville Centre of Excellence on Saturday, claiming their first-ever victory over the New Zealand Warriors in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, storming to a commanding 43-14 victory in Round Nine
The Eels struck first through right winger Devonte Vaivela, finishing off a slick team play that featured a sharp offload to Jordan Samrani. Jonah Pezet converted from a tough angle on the eastern touchline to make it 6-0. It was a stunning way to open proceedings.
Prop Toni Mataele crossed shortly after to extend Parramatta's lead to 10-0, powering over the line on a strong repeat set. Pezet again converted. A flowing backline movement on the left edge then saw Mataele claim his second of the afternoon, showcasing an electric turn of pace to beat the Warriors' defence. At half-time, Parramatta led 24-0 — a scoreline that reflected their total dominance of the opening 40 minutes.
The Warriors emerged with purpose after the break, with back-rower Bishop Neal breaking through on the last tackle to reduce the deficit to 24-4. But Parramatta's response was emphatic. Mataele crossed for his second try of the match to push the lead out to 30-4, before Zach Visconti barged over to extend it further. Fullback Apa Twidle, playing through discomfort, then produced one of the plays of the match — fielding a kick, then running 50 metres to score and leave the crowd at Kellyville on its feet.
The Warriors did not give up, with centre Jeremiah Lemana and winger Daeon Amituanai adding late four-pointers to provide some respectability to the score. But the Eels closed the match out in style, with Visconti sealing the win to confirm a 42-14 victory. Peasant was superb with the boot, kicking seven from seven.
Talking Points
Jonah Pezet was outstanding with the boot, finishing the afternoon with a perfect seven from seven in conversions. His kicking game and organisation in attack were central to Parramatta's rhythm throughout.
Key Moment
With the Eels leading 30-4 in the second half, Upa Twidle fielded a kick and, despite nursing an ankle injury, ran 50 metres to score and effectively end the contest. It was not only the defining moment of the match, but also a fitting tribute to a player who has given everything for Parramatta in this grade.
What's Next?
The Warriors are on a bye in Round 10, giving them a valuable opportunity to regroup and address the defensive lapses that were exposed here. The Eels, meanwhile, face an enormous assignment at home against the competition leaders, the North Sydney Bears, at the Centre of Excellence at 4:00 PM.
