Magpies back in winners circle after impressive display against the Jets

Game Summary

The Western Suburbs Magpies produced one of the performances of the season in Round Nine of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, storming to a commanding 28-4 victory over the Newtown Jets at Henson Park to claim the Tommy Raudonikis Cup in front of a crowd of 8,972.

The Jets entered the match as heavy favourites, sitting fourth on the ladder with 12 competition points, while the Magpies were languishing in 11th with just six. But from the moment Javon Andrews crossed for the opening try in the 18th minute — barging over through sheer determination after the play appeared to break down — it was clear this would not be an ordinary afternoon at the famous old ground.

The first half was a tightly contested, evenly matched affair, with both sides guilty of errors. Andrews showed good footwork and persistence to get the Magpies off the mark before converting his own try to give West's a 6-0 lead. The Jets hit back on the stroke of half-time through Chris Vea'ila, who finished off a slick backline movement that exposed a second rower defending at centre. A missed conversion left the margin at 6-4 at the interval — the first time all season the Magpies had led at half-time.

The second half began with West's briefly reduced to 12 men after Fiohiva Siale Fainga'a was sent to the sin bin, but the Jets were unable to capitalise. Instead, it was the Magpies who pounced. Heath Mason finished a brilliantly designed set play from a Ben Stevanovic kick in the 47th minute to push the lead out to 10-4, and the momentum swung decisively.

Fainga'a finished in the corner to extend the margin to 20-4 with eight minutes remaining. Andrews converted superbly from the sideline to make it 22-4.  With three minutes on the clock, Solomone Saukuru intercepted a Newtown pass and raced away to score the fifth try of the afternoon. Andrews added the conversion to seal a 28-4 victory. For the Jets, it was a chastening afternoon, their heavy defeat a sharp reminder that no game in this competition is guaranteed.

Talking Points

Charlie Murray was a colossus for West's, leading the team in run meters, runs, and tackles — a complete all-round performance that embodied everything the Magpies needed on the day.

Liam Ison's comeback from an ACL injury continued, playing a full game for the Jets in just his second match back. His resilience was one of the few bright spots for Newtown on the day.

Key Moments

Ben Stovanovic had been controlling the game all day with his kicking, and as he looked up and saw Mason, he kicked deep and long in behind for Mason who was too fast to score in what was an exciting passage of play for the Magpies.

What's Next?

The Magpies travel to Melbourne in Round 10, facing a tough road trip. The Jets, meanwhile, host South Sydney.  Taking on a Rabbitohs side in strong form — a challenging assignment as they look to regroup after this heavy defeat.
