The Newcastle Knights produced a strong performance to defeat the Melbourne Storm 46-20 in Round Nine of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, turning a tight early contest into a commanding victory at McDonald Jones Stadium.
It was a physical opening, with both sides trading sets and coming close to striking first. The Knights were held up over the line, while Melbourne threatened through a well-placed grubber, but neither side could break through early.
The deadlock was broken when Newcastle capitalised on a set restart deep in Storm territory. Harrison Graham darted from dummy-half, slipping a short ball to Peter Hola, who crashed over under the posts. The conversion pushed the Knights ahead 6-0.
Melbourne responded almost immediately through Moses Leo, who produced a brilliant 60-metre effort, stepping back against the grain and slicing through the defence to level the scores.
From there the Knights began to take control, with Graham again at the centre. His kicking game and vision created repeat opportunities, while his service around the ruck kept the Storm defence under constant pressure. Midway through the half, Hola grabbed his second chasing through a clever grubber from Graham to plant the ball down.
Lachlan Crouch powered over from close range following a quick play-the-ball, before Graham again sparked the attack, dummying and breaking the line then linking with Wilson De Courcey, who finished near the posts.
The Storm found a late response before the break, targeting the Knights’ weakened left edge after an injury to Siteni Taukamo. A slick shift and flick pass from Moses Leo sent Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown over, narrowing the margin to 24-10 at half-time.
Newcastle picked up where they left off in the second half. Crouch crossed for his second early, continuing a rare afternoon where both starting front-rowers bagged doubles, before captain Elijah Salesa-Leaumoana produced a powerful solo effort, palming off defenders to score under the posts.
To their credit, Melbourne refused to go away. Moses Leo sparked a brief comeback with his second try, before Eli Morris added another soon after, reducing the margin to 36-20 and giving the visitors a glimmer of hope.
But every time the Storm threatened, the Knights had the answer. A break through the middle from Reeve Howard opened the field up late, with Mitch Henderson throwing a long cut-out ball to James Schiller, who finished in the corner to seal the result.
Newcastle added one final highlight on full-time, as Wilson De Courcey intercepted a last-ditch Storm attack and sprinted the length of the field to cap off a dominant performance.
In the end it was Harrison Graham’s control and creativity that set the tone, while strong finishing across the park ensured the Knights turned pressure into points. After an even start Newcastle proved too clinical, running away with a convincing 46-20 win.
Talking Points
Harrison Graham was the standout, controlling the game from dummy-half and playing a hand in multiple tries. His running game, vision and kicking created constant pressure, with three try assists highlighting a dominant all-round performance.
Peter Hola and Lachlan Crouch both bagged doubles in a rare effort from the starting front-rowers. Their ability to win the ruck battle laid the platform for Newcastle’s attacking flow.
Wilson De Courcey also impressed on the edge, finishing with two tries including a full-field intercept on the buzzer, while consistently threatening with his support play.
Key Moment
The key moment came midway through the first half when the Knights turned early pressure into points through back-to-back tries to Hola and Crouch. That shift in momentum transformed a tight contest into a commanding lead, giving Newcastle the control they never relinquished.
What’s Next?
