Raiders score third straight win after stunning second half

Game Summary

The Canberra Raiders produced a stunning second-half performance to defeat the Sydney Roosters 35-22 in a thrilling The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Round Nine clash at Wentworth Park, claiming their third consecutive victory.

The Raiders made the perfect start when Kain Anderson crossed for his first try following a quick-hands move down the left edge, with Jalen Afamasaga providing the spark at five-eighth. Coby Black converted to level the scores at 6-6 after the Roosters had opened the scoring through Jaxson Allen, who roamed from dummy-half to finish a slick Toby Rodwell-inspired set inside the opening six minutes.

The Raiders then shifted momentum crossing for two tries in quick succession. Anderson doubled up after Afamasaga again provided superb service, before Mark Tuialii crashed over off a Clydsdale offload and carried Canberra to an 18-6 lead. Black converted both to extend the advantage to 12 points.

The Roosters showed their class by hitting back before half-time. Junior Pauga crossed out wide following a well-constructed set from Rodwell, before Ioelu snuck in from dummy-half to bring the deficit back to just two points at 18-16 heading into the break.

The Raiders resumed where they left off, with Anderson completing a stunning hat-trick early in the second half after Afamasaga held up a pass to put him in the clear. Black added the conversion to push the margin out to eight. The Roosters responded through Ioelu again, who bagged a double, before a neat Rodwell conversion drew the margin back to two at 24-22.

A moment of brilliance from Tuialii proved decisive. The young winger attracted the defence before a Gidley-esque flick pass sent an unmarked teammate away to score, pushing Canberra's lead out to six. Malachi Smith then crashed over from dummy-half to extend the lead further, before Black potted a field goal with under four minutes remaining to give the Raiders an unassailable 13-point buffer.

Despite Ioelu's late consolation, the Roosters could not bridge the gap. The Raiders were clinical in the clutch moments, with Coby Black near-flawless with the boot in a dominant 35-22 victory.

Talking Points

Kain Anderson was the match-winner for the Raiders, claiming a hat-trick with tries in both halves of the contest. The centre was a constant threat and showed great finishing ability.

Canberra's pack laid the platform throughout, with Clydsdale and Jesse Milin providing relentless go-forward and crucial offloads that consistently broke the defensive line.

Coby Black was composed all afternoon. The former Bronco controlled the game from halfback, delivered a string of try assists, and was almost faultless from the kicking tee before sealing the result with a composed field goal in the closing stages.

Key Moment

With just over six minutes remaining and the score at 34-22 the Roosters had the chance to threaten a comeback with an attacking set in close range. However, with an early error in the set the Raiders were able to reclaim possession and ultimately hang on for the win.

What's Next?

The Raiders will host the Penrith Panthers in a mouth-watering Round 10 clash, testing their three-game winning streak against one of the competition's form sides. The Roosters, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back when they take on Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Belmore Sports Ground.
