Proten Cup Men's representative side named

The first Proten Cup representative men’s side has been named to take on Regan Cup in Grenfell on Saturday 16 May.

The 21-player squad, which is the first to be named since 2019, features six players from premiers Barellan Rams, six players from runners-up Ivanhoe Roosters, five from Goolgowi and two each from Hillston and Rankins Springs.

The team was named by coaches Noah Forbutt and Adam Thomas on Saturday, with players required to train once more before the game on Friday 15 May at Yenda. The training side trained twice in the past few weeks, at Goolgowi on Saturday 18 April and Saturday 2 May.

The side is the first to represent the competition at representative level since 2019, where they defeated Murray Cup 36-6 at Narrandera.

From prior representative teams, only Jamie Parsons remains from the 2019 squad, while Mark Huntly and Adam Thomas return after representing in 2018.

Of the newer players, Tommy and Nathan Brettschneider earn call-ups after playing for the Bluebirds since 2018, Henry and Oliver Taylor earn their first caps after five seasons with Goolgowi, Forbutt will play his first representative game after debuting in 2021 and winning Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2025, Trey Woodland earns selection before his first official game with Goolgowi this season, and prop Shaun Aylett will play after playing in both Proten Cup and Group 20 first grade Grand Finals in 2025.

Their opponents, Regan Cup, are the second division competition of Group 7 on the south coast and comprise of teams from Warilla, St Georges Basin, Crookhaven, Mt Warrigal, Jamberoo, Robertson, Shellharbour and Southern Highlands. Their competition has just completed Round Three.

Other games on the day include an Under 18s game between Woodbridge Cup and CRRL, League Tag games featuring Woodbridge, George Tooke Shield and Regan Cup and the main game will feature Men’s Woodbridge Cup v George Tooke Shield.

Proten Cup v Regan Cup will kick-off at 1.50pm.
