Game Summary
Parramatta Eels produced a disciplined defensive display and took their opportunities with precision to defeat the St George Illawarra Dragons 20-12 in the final match of Round 11 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at North Sydney Oval, closing out the Beer, Food & Footy Festival weekend.
The Eels struck first when halfback Jonah Pezet repeatedly probed the Dragons' try-line in the opening exchanges before squirming over himself inside the first 10 minutes to lead 4-0.
A moment of opportunism just before half-time extended the Eels' lead to 8-0. What appeared to be a knock-on saw the Dragons stop playing, but Apa Twidle and Isaiah Iongi kept the ball alive and combined for a try against the run of play, exposing the golden rule of playing to the whistle. It was the kind of composed, fast-thinking play that had typified the Eels' attack throughout.
Jacob Halangahu's Dragons, playing without several first-choice options including the injured Kade Reed, found the scoreboard in the second half through Hame Sele's crash-ball effort to trail 8-6. However, the game swung decisively when Twidle read an inside pass from Pezet and accelerated onto the ball, finding Kitione Kautoga in support to push the lead to 14-6.
The Eels then struck twice in quick succession. Lorenzo Talataina produced the try of the match, dancing through multiple defenders before offloading for Araz Nanva to score, before Pezet finally found the posts to extend the lead to 20-6 with around 17 minutes remaining.
To the Dragons' credit, Nick Quinn darted from dummy-half with three minutes left to pull the score back to 20-12 and set up a tense finish. However, the deficit proved too steep, with Parramatta's goal-line defence holding firm once more in the closing stages.
Talking Points
Parramatta's goal-line defence was the story of the first half. The Dragons spent about 20 consecutive tackles inside the red zone and came away with nothing, with the Eels repeatedly forcing errors or making try-saving tackles.
Jonah Pezet's influence was constant. Whether he was taking on the line himself, chipping early in the count to exploit Tyler Peckham-Harris's positioning, or putting his outside men away, he was a constant threat.
Key Moment
With the Dragons pressing hard in the second half and the score at 8-6, Apa Twidle read a telegraphed inside ball from Pezet and burst through the defensive line before the markers could adjust. He passed on to second-rower Kitione Kautoga to score. The try, converted to make it 14-6, effectively ended the Dragons' chance of a comeback.
What's Next?
The Dragons face last year's Grand Final opponents the Warriors in Round 12, while the Eels enjoy a bye before resuming their campaign against Newcastle Knights in Round 13.
