Game Summary
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs delivered a dominant performance to defeat the Melbourne Storm 38-14 in Round 12 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday.
The Bulldogs set the tone early, scoring with their very first attacking set as Sosaia Alatini crossed in the centres after sharp lead-up work from the forwards. The conversion was unsuccessful, but the home side had their four points and the intent was clear.
From there, the Bulldogs capitalised on a Storm error when Jonathan Sua intercepted and sprinted 80 metres to score under the posts. Sua converted his own try to push the lead to 10-nil after just nine minutes, and the Storm had no answers.
Alekolasimi Jones barged over in the 13th minute to make it 16-nil, before Shaun O'Sullivan produced a 40/20 that set up the platform for a fourth try. Alatini crossed for his second of the game, and the conversion extended the lead to 22-nil with eight minutes remaining in the first half.
Melbourne showed some fight late in the opening half, earning consecutive sets in the Bulldogs' end and forcing repeat drop-outs. Their persistence was rewarded when Angus Hinchey crossed in the corner to make it 22-4 at half-time. However, the moment was clouded by the sin-binning of both Jack Hetherington and Josh Curran for repeated infringements, leaving both sides with 12 men for the final minutes of the half.
The Bulldogs resumed with the same intent after the break, with Kade Dykes finishing off a sweeping move to extend the lead to 26-4. The Storm hit back through Lazarus Vaalepu, who crashed over after a lapse in Bulldogs' defence following a big Nick O'Meley hit, making it 26-10.
Jonathan Sua dotted down for his second try to push the Bulldogs past 30 points, before Maila Setu and another converted try from Alex Conti rounded out a comprehensive second half. Hayden Watson scored a late Storm consolation, but the result had long been decided.
At full-time, the Bulldogs ran out 38-14 winners, recording seven tries to three in what was a statement win that could prove pivotal to their season.
Talking Points
The Bulldogs' left-edge attack was devastating throughout, with Sua and Alatini both finishing with doubles and repeatedly exposing the Storm defence.
Ill discipline threatened to overshadow the Bulldogs' performance, with Josh Curran sin-binned late in the first half, while prop Alekolasimi Jones was sent off in the final minutes for a late hit.
Jack Hetherington brought enormous energy for Melbourne and was arguably their best forward, carrying hard all afternoon and consistently testing the Bulldogs' defence.
