Bunnies hold on as Bears come up short in North Sydney thriller

South Sydney Rabbitohs claimed a hard-fought 16-12 victory over the North Sydney Bears in Round 12 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at North Sydney Oval, in a match that lived up to its billing as the standout clash of the round.

The Bunnies struck first just past the 10-minute mark when halfback Jayden Sullivan threw a sublime dummy and sliced through the Bears' defence to score beside the posts. Jonah Glover converted to give South Sydney an early 6-0 lead, and the momentum appeared firmly with the visitors.

Glover then added a try of his own, replicating Sullivan's trick with a dummy of his own before racing to the corner. Despite missing the conversion, the Bunnies had stretched their lead to 10-0 and the Bears were in danger of being buried early.
North Sydney hit back immediately through a clever short kick-off, with captain Coby Thomas finishing from close range after the Rabbitohs failed to deal with the restart. Kieran Hayman converted to make it 10-6 and the Bears were right back in the contest.

South Sydney responded quickly through Jordi Mazzone, who finished in the corner after a slick intercept, racing his way down the field to extend the lead to 16-6. However, the Bears refused to go away, with Jake Toby muscling over 45 seconds before half-time to trim the deficit to four. Hayman's conversion made it 16-12 at the break.

The second half was a tense, grinding affair with neither side able to find the decisive score. The Bears applied wave after wave of pressure on the Rabbitohs' line but were repeatedly repelled by a resolute defensive effort, with several try-scoring chances going begging through handling errors and forward passes at critical moments.

The Rabbitohs had opportunities of their own to put the game to bed but were similarly unable to convert their chances, including one try that was correctly ruled out for obstruction with just over six minutes remaining.

The Bunnies held their nerve through an anxious final five minutes as the Bears launched a series of desperate sets inside South Sydney's 20. When the siren sounded, the score remained 16-12 – unchanged from half-time – and the Rabbitohs celebrated a gutsy win that lifted them into a share of second place on the ladder.

Talking Points

  • Both halves played a starring role with the boot – Sullivan and Glover each scored via the dummy-and-go in the first half, and the Bears had no answer for it in the moment.
  • Jake Toby was a constant handful for the Rabbitohs all afternoon. The North Queensland product led the competition in tackle-breaks coming into the match, and he added several more here, including the crucial try just before the break.
  • North Sydney's inability to convert their second-half pressure into points was ultimately the difference. The Bears repeatedly found themselves deep in Rabbitohs territory but were let down by uncharacteristic errors at critical moments.
  • Logan Dixon performed admirably in the fullback role in the absence of the in-form Matt Dufty, handling a heavy aerial workload and making several important catches under pressure in the final stages.

Key Moment

With North Sydney trailing 16-12 and mounting a fierce second-half display, the Bears appeared destined to level the scores when a try was chalked off for obstruction in the 74th minute. The call proved the turning point, keeping South Sydney four points clear and gave the Bunnies the opportunity to run down the clock and secure the two competition points.

What's Next?

Both sides have the bye in Round 13, giving their squads a valuable week to rest and regroup. With the two teams scheduled for a rematch in Round 15, both sides currently three points behind ladder leaders Penrith.
