The Newcastle Knights ran riot at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday afternoon, powering to a dominant 50-16 victory over the Parramatta Eels.
The home side wasted little time, opening the scoring in the third minute through a piece of individual brilliance from Wilson De Courcey. On the last tackle, the Knights shifted left where the winger grubbered ahead before regathering his own kick to score the first points of the game. The conversion drifted wide, leaving Newcastle ahead 4-0.
Only minutes later the Knights doubled their advantage. Tyson Gamble spotted space down the left edge and delicately chipped over the defensive line. James Schiller raced through, collected the bouncing ball and shrugged off the Parramatta defence before sprinting beneath the posts. Connor Votano converted the try to make it 10-0.
Parramatta were handed a lifeline when the Knights kicked the ensuing restart out on the full, gifting the visitors prime field position near halfway.
The Eels capitalised immediately when halfback Apa Twidle took matters into his own hands, attacking the right edge and muscling his way through defenders to score beside the posts. Converting his own try, the deficit was reduced to four.
The visitors levelled proceedings in the 17th minute through another classy piece of play from their halfback. A quick play-the-ball created space on the short side and Twidle produced a perfectly weighted grubber kick for Jordan Hill, who won the race to the ball and crossed in the corner. Twidle's conversion gave Parramatta a 12-10 lead.
Connor Votano helped swing momentum back towards the home side with a brilliant cut-out pass that found Schiller on the right wing. The flyer crossed untouched for his second try of the afternoon to restore Newcastle's lead, 14-12.
The Knights produced one last statement before halftime, and again it was Gamble pulling the strings. Attacking the right edge with another deft kick over the defensive line, Schiller soared above the contest before flicking a pass back inside while appearing destined to go into touch, allowing Toby Winter to finish in the corner. Votano converted for a 20-12 advantage at the break
Winter grabbed his second try of the afternoon in the 47th minute after another attacking kick down the right edge. Votano's grubber caused chaos in the in-goal, as Winter showed great hands to re-gather the bouncing ball and score. The conversion was missed, but Newcastle's lead had stretched to 24-12.
Diesel Hagan was next to make an impact on the Knights lead. Darting from dummy-half, he spotted space through the middle and exploded into the backfield. With defenders trailing in vain, the hooker raced 70 metres untouched to score a stunning solo try that brought the Newcastle crowd to life. Votano converted to push the margin out to 18 points.
Parramatta refused to fold, finding a response in the 54th minute. The Knights defence was drawn in by a beautifully executed shift to the left, creating an overlap that winger Mohamed Alameddine finished in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the Eels trailing 30-16.
Schiller again played a key role in the Knights second-half raid, producing a grubber kick that rolled around to find Votano in the in-goal who managed to ground the ball just before it bounced dead. Votano converted his own and Newcastle's seventh try of the afternoon for a 36-16 lead.
Second-rower Francis Manuleleua found way onto the try-scorers lift after Gamble sliced through the defensive line combining to throw a short ball for Manuleleua, who powered through defenders to score beside the posts. Votano added the extras for a 26-point lead.
Schiller's outstanding afternoon reached another level with eight minutes remaining. Exploiting an overlap on Newcastle's favoured right edge, the winger stepped back inside the defence and raced away to complete a deserved hat-trick.
As Parramatta's error count continued to rise, Gamble delivered yet another try assist, this time launching a cross-field kick towards the left corner. Kyle McCarthy rose above the defence and finished acrobatically to cap off a dominant 50-16 victory.
Talking Points
- Tyson Gamble controlled the game with his kicking attack, producing multiple try assists through chips, grubbers and cross-field kicks as the Eels struggled to contain Newcastle's right-edge raids.
- James Schiller was unstoppable, finishing with a hat-trick while also setting up Toby Winter's first try, repeatedly exposing Parramatta's left-edge defence.
Key Moment
Diesel Hagan's 70-metre solo try early in the second-half proved the turning point. With Parramatta still in the game, the hooker darted from dummy-half, bursting through the middle, and raced away untouched. The try stretched Newcastle's lead and spark to a dominant 50-16 victory.
What's Next?
The Knights will look to build on their emphatic victory when they travel to Seabrook Reserve to face the Melbourne Storm next Saturday. Meanwhile, Parramatta will have a quick turnaround before taking on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Accor Stadium, with both sides looking to climb the NSW Cup ladder.
