Game Summary
The Penrith Panthers produced a dominant first half on the way victory in Round 13 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, running out 30-20 winners over Warriors at Parker Street Reserve in Penrith.
Unbeaten since Round Three, the Panthers set the tone from the opening exchanges and put on a composed, clinical performance. An early turnover gave Penrith ideal field position and Kurt Falls made no mistake in capitalising, bursting through a gaping hole in the defensive line to score inside the first five minutes. Zakauri Clarke converted and the Panthers led 6-0.
A second try followed shortly after when Sione Fonua benefitted from a perfect chip over the top by Haami Loza, gathering the bouncing ball to extend the lead to 12-0 inside 10 minutes. Clarke added the extras, and when a slick backline movement saw Jesse McLean glide through untouched to score before half-time, Penrith took an 18-0 buffer into the sheds.
The Warriors' task became significantly harder early in the second half when Connor Bowden was sin-binned for a late shot on Falls. Penrith immediately capitalised, Toby Crosby stretching over the try-line with a dive to push the margin to 24-0. Falls then put the game beyond doubt, chipping on the last and finding Jaxen Edgar for a fifth try to extend the lead to 30-nil.
To their credit, the Warriors refused to capitulate. Harry Tauafiafi-Iutoi crossed for a consolation try midway through the second half, then a Jett Cleary dummy and score opened the door for a late flurry.
A spectacular team try finished by Jye Linnane was arguably the best of the afternoon. Luke Metcalf then spun wide from a penalty tap, and Linnane swooped again to bring the score to 30-20 with minutes remaining.
Despite the late Warriors' surge, the Panthers held firm for a 30-20 final score.
Talking Points
Kurt Falls stepped up in the absence of Jack Cole, leading Penrith around the park with composure and a sharp kicking game, a timely reminder of his value to the club.
Zakauri Clarke continued his outstanding season with the boot, overtaking North Sydney Bears' Kieran Hayman to become the competition's leading point-scorer for the season so far with 110.
Luke Metcalf's NSW Cup stint produced some promising flashes, particularly his long cut-out pass that set up the second Warriors' try.
Nick Murphy was one of the Panthers' standout performers, consistently providing go-forward from kick returns and injecting himself into defensive situations when it mattered most.
Key Moment
As the Panthers led 12-0 and the Warriors had stemmed the flow of points with about 15 minutes until half-time, centre Jesse McLean skipped across field and burst through a gap in the middle of the defence to score and help Penrith to an 18-0 lead. That score remained until the second half and made the comeback task all the more difficult for the visitors.
What's Next?
The Panthers remain atop The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup ladder on 23 points and face Western Suburbs Magpies in Round 14, while the Warriors have the bye.
