Knights withstand late fightback for win over Storm

Game Summary

The Newcastle Knights held on for a 34-28 victory over the Melbourne Storm in Round 14 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Seabrook Reserve, in what became an absorbing contest after the visitors threatened a second-half fightback.

Newcastle entered the clash in fourth spot on 18 competition points and had an electric start. The Knights needed only two plays to capitalise on an early error, James Schiller catching a tight pass and diving over in the corner to score his 13th try of the season. Connor Votano added the conversion for a 6-0 lead inside the first minute.

The strong start continued as Knights halves Tyson Gamble and Matthew Hunter repeatedly put the Storm under pressure. A flowing back-line movement involving Francis Manuleleua and Schiller created the chance for Votano to score his own try in the early exchanges, stretching the advantage to 10-nil. A converted try to Schiller - his second of the game - with a spectacular diving finish in the corner extended the lead to 14-nil.

A Kyle McCarthy intercept was then converted by Votano to send the Knights into a commanding 20-0 lead. The Storm did respond to get a foothold before half-time, with Josh Durkin darting over from close range on tackle four, then Amaziah Murgha scoring their second try from a Preston Conn line-break to trail 20-12 at the break.

The Knights reasserted themselves early in the second stanza. After repelling three consecutive Storm sets they shifted the ball to Asu Kepaoa on the left edge where he found a gap to score, with Votano converting from the sideline to make it 26-12.

When Francis Manuleleleua scored on the last tackle following slick work from Matthew Hunter and Tyson Gamble, the Knights were well clear at 32-18.

But the Storm mounted a stirring comeback. K-Cl Newton-Whare crashed over after a sharp run from Gabriel Satrick out of dummy-half, before Liam Williams pounced on a high kick from Trent Toelau that was tipped back inside. Toelau then grabbed a try of his own, beating four defenders from the back of a ruck to make it 32-28 with minutes remaining.

A late Knights penalty allowed Votano to slot the two points, then the final siren sounded with the scoreboard reading 34-28.

Talking Points

James Schiller was once again a strong performer for the Knights, scoring two tries to bring his tally for the season to 14. His second - an acrobatic dive over the try-line - was one of the individual highlights of the match.

Gabriel Satrick was the Storm's most dangerous ball-runner. His quick service and willingness to take on the line repeatedly put the Knights' defence under pressure in the second half.

Amaziah Murgha was a constant threat for the Storm at fullback, scoring twice and creating multiple opportunities with his speed on kick returns.

Key Moment

With the Knights leading 14-0 and showing no signs of being troubled, the Storm worked their way downfield in what looked to be a promising attack. Keagan Russell-Smith's pass was picked off by Kyle McCarthy, who turned on the afterburners and outpaced the covering defence to score an 80-metre intercept try. Votano's conversion made it 20-0, a margin the Storm were unable to overcome.

What's Next?

Both sides have the chance to recover next weekend, with a bye during the abbreviated Round 15.
