The Penrith Panthers claimed their 10th victory of the season in dominant fashion, defeating the Western Suburbs Magpies 30-16 in Round 14 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Lidcombe Oval. The ladder-leading Panthers were rarely troubled despite a spirited fightback from the home side in the first half.
Penrith were first to strike when fullback Jaxen Edgar backed up a well-executed high ball by winger Jirah Liddiard to score in the opening exchanges. Zakauri Clarke converted from the sideline to hand the Panthers a 6-0 lead. The Panthers then struck again midway through the first half when Edgar returned serve, getting a pass out to Liddiard himself to score. Clarke's conversion stretched the margin to 12-0.
The Magpies looked to be heading for a difficult afternoon but found some life before the interval. Centre Danny Gabrael broke through a gap to cut the deficit to six, before second-rower Josese Lanyon crossed to make it 12-10 with the Magpies in full flight. A penalty goal to the Panthers in the dying seconds of the first half restored a four-point buffer, sending the sides to half-time at 14-10.
The second half opened with Penrith immediately pressing and eventually crossing through centre Tuaomaliemavaitoelau Patea after a chip kick sparked a piece of ad-lib play. Clarke could not convert, leaving the score at 18-10.
The Magpies were competitive throughout the middle stints of the second half and made their share of line-breaks, but the Panthers' defensive resilience proved the difference. A key passage of play saw Penrith repel multiple consecutive attacking sets near their own try-line, before Edgar scored his second of the day after taking a deft dummy-half pass and slicing through the defence to make it 24-10 after the conversion.
Nick Murphy crossed for a straightforward try in the final 10 minutes to put the result beyond doubt, with Clarke's conversion pushing the margin to 20 points at 30-10. Mitchell Taotua grabbed a late consolation try for the Magpies to round out the 30-16 final score.
Talking Points
- Jaxen Edgar was Penrith's standout performer, finishing with two tries and a constant threat as a kick-return weapon. His ability to read the play and back up his teammates was a feature throughout.
- Jirah Liddiard was a handful at every high ball, winning multiple contests to set up tries and scoring one himself. The young Penrith junior is rapidly emerging as one of the competition's most exciting outside backs.
- The Magpies' fightback from 12-0 down to 12-10 was the game's most compelling passage, with back-to-back tries in the final 10 minutes of the first half threatening an upset. Their inability to convert field position into points in the second half ultimately proved their undoing.
- Zakauri Clarke was reliable with the boot, landing four conversions from five attempts, as well as a penalty goal in the first half.
Key Moment
With the Magpies trailing 12-10 and pressing for the lead late in the first half, Penrith were rewarded a penalty in the dying seconds. Zakauri Clarke stepped up to slot the penalty goal and restore a four-point half-time lead. It proved a decisive swing – the Magpies never led, and Penrith used the buffer to control the second half.
