Game Summary
The Canberra Raiders produced a stunning second-half to overrun the Parramatta Eels 38-12 in Round 15 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.
The Raiders entered the match on the back of four wins from their last five, while the Eels were searching for redemption after a 60-4 defeat to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs seven days earlier. Canberra's task was made harder when Joe Roddy was sent to the sin bin inside the opening 15 minutes for a high tackle, and the Eels capitalised immediately.
With the Raiders a man down, Parramatta struck twice in quick succession. Araz Nanva chased down a kick from Apa Twidle to score in the corner, and moments later Zack Visconti powered over from close range to give the Eels a 12-0 lead heading into the final quarter of the first half.
Canberra refused to fold. Halfback Coby Black threaded a ball to Chevy Stewart, who used his speed to crash over and bring the Raiders back within six points.
Ethan Alaia then displayed the footwork that has made him one of the NSW Cup's most dangerous players, stepping his way through the Parramatta defence to level the scores at 12-12. Both sides went into half-time all square.
The Raiders came out of the sheds with renewed purpose. The Eels defended their line admirably until Black spotted a quick play-the-ball, straightened his run and sliced through to put the Raiders in front for the first time.
Canberra's dominance in the second stanza continued. Sione Finau crossed for a four-pointer, followed by Regan Carr finishing off a sweeping left-side move to extend the lead to 26-12. The Eels were dealt a further blow when Toni Mata'ele was sin-binned, leaving them with 12 men and in a precarious position.
Teenager Jayze Tuigamala, fresh off the interchange bench, bulldozed his way over to extend the margin before Black sealed his strong performance with a second try. The halfback finished with 18 points for the afternoon as the Raiders ran out emphatic 38-12 winners.
Talking Points
Coby Black was one of Canberra's best. The former Brisbane Bronco finished with two tries, five conversions and 18 points, continually testing the Eels with a kicking game that troubled the Parramatta back three all afternoon.
Ethan Alaia continues to stake his claim for first-grade football. The Goulburn product's eight-try season has been built on deceptive footwork and an uncanny ability to find space, and his first-half try was a prime example.
Key Moment
With the scores locked at 12-12 midway through the second half, Coby Black latched onto a quick play-the-ball 19 metres from the try-line and backed his speed against a retreating Eels defence. He stepped inside, straightened and scored to put the Raiders in front 18-12. That try sparked five unanswered tries and 26 unanswered points, transforming a tightly-contested match into a rout.
What's Next?
The Raiders face the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park on Sunday in Round 16, while the Eels have the bye to regroup before facing Newcastle Knights to kick off NSWRL Regional Magic Round at Scully Park in Tamworth.
