Resilient Knights repel Dragon’s fightback

The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Round 16 clash at McDonald Jones Stadium saw the Newcastle Knights hold off a spirited St. George Illawarra Dragons fightback to claim a 24-18 victory.

The Knights dominated the opening exchanges, racing out to an 18-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes before the Dragons clawed their way back into the contest. Despite completing the entire second half with only 12 men following a send-off right on half-time, the Knights resilience did enough to secure a crucial two points.

Matthew Hunter drew first blood, finishing off a slick sequence that featured a well-weighted ball from Lachlan Crouch through Brodie Jones. The big front rowers were influential early, with Crouch generating momentum getting a tip off pass through to Jones who broke the line before finding Hunter in support.

The Knights extended their lead in the 14th minute when a quick play-the-ball in front of the posts saw dummy-half Matthew Arthur spark a shift pass to Jones who again broke through the defensive line to crash over the try line.

Kyle McCarthy added a third try in the 18th minute, finishing neatly in the corner after Connor Votano found him quickly on the left edge. With Votano converting three from three, the Knights had remarkably built an 18-0 lead inside the opening quarter of the match.

The Dragons finally got on the board before half-time when Christian Tuipulotu, returning from injury, used his power to roll over the Knights defence and score, with Tyler Peckham-Harris converting to make it 18-6 at the break. Despite trailing heavily, the Dragons had momentum heading into the sheds.

Knights second-rower Asu Kepaoa was sent off on the stroke of half-time, which dramatically shifted the dynamics of the contest.

The Dragons capitalised on their extra man advantage early in the second half when Lyhkan King-Togia crossed the try line. The Dragons quick hands saw the ball move swiftly down field before handing in the hands of King-Togia to run his way over. Peckham-Harris converted to bring the margin back to six points and set up a tense final 30 minutes.

Wilson De Courcey temporarily steadied the Knights in the 62nd minute, latching onto a perfectly-placed grubber from Hunter to score. But the Dragons weren't done – Haele Finau crossed moments later after Ryan Hutchinson's kick sat up perfectly, bringing the score to 24-18 with 10 minutes remaining.

The Knights, playing the entire second half with 12 men, defended desperately within the final 10 minutes to hold onto their 6-point lead and claim the two points in Round 16.

Talking Points

  • The Knights' fast start was the foundation of the victory. Three tries in the opening 20 minutes set a platform that the Dragons could never fully claw back, even with the numerical advantage in the second half.
  • Asu Kepaoa’s send-off at half-time was the defining moment of the match. Playing 40 minutes with 12 men is an enormous ask at this level, and the Knights' defensive effort to hold on despite the disadvantage was remarkable.
  • Lachlan Crouch and Brodie jones were outstanding with ball in hand throughout the first half. The Knights' forwards consistently beat defenders at the line, created opportunities and were a constant threat as the Knights' chief ball-runner’s.
  • Tyler Peckham-Harris was a dangerous weapon for the Dragons in the kick-return game, averaging big metres from every opportunity and consistently putting his side in good field position.

Key Moment

With the Dragons pressing late and the Knights down to 12 men, Tuipulotu was held up over the try-line in a crucial defensive set deep in the Knights' in-goal. Three defenders drove him back, forcing a drop-out and ultimately allowing the Knights to repel the Dragons' final push and see out the win.

What's Next?

Both sides will be looking ahead to The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup's Regional Magic Round next weekend at Scully Park in Tamworth. The Knights will take on the Eels, while the Dragons need a strong response to stay in finals contention when they prepare to face the Panthers.
