Game Summary
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat the Warriors 44-16 in Round 16 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch. The Warriors led 16-12 at half-time, but the Bulldogs scored 32 unanswered points after the break to run out emphatic winners.
The Warriors had an electric start, with Jye Linnane scoring inside the opening minutes after winger Sio Kali flicked a late offload. Jett Cleary converted to give the defending premiers an early 6-0 lead, with the side's quick play-the-ball speed and wide-passing causing the Bulldogs real problems in the early exchanges.
The Bulldogs hit back through a clever bust from Gordon Chan Kam Tong, who pounced from dummy-half after a sharp play-the-ball by Broden Konz gave him the opening he needed. Seann O'Sullivan's conversion levelled the scores at 6-all.
The Warriors pushed back ahead courtesy of Jason Salalilo, who crossed off the back of a high kick. Amituanai challenged the ball in the air before his pass found Salalilo in space. Cleary's conversion extended the Warriors' lead to 12-6.
Linnane followed up with his second try soon after to extend the hosts' advantage to 16-6.
The Bulldogs were given hope just before half-time when Latrell Fing delivered a precise catch-and-pass for Louis Grossemy to cross out wide. O'Sullivan converted to close the margin to 16-12 heading into the break, gifting the Bulldogs a platform to launch their second-half assault.
The Bulldogs completed a decisive turnaround in the second half, scoring five tries in an extraordinary opening 20 minutes. Jonathan Sua crossed in the 43rd minute, Logan Spinks scored in the 47th, and Nick O'Meley soon followed, putting the Bulldogs firmly in command at 28-16.
Spinks sealed the contest with his second try set up by a precision grubber from Taye Cochrane, then Jonathan Sua scored his second with a 90-metre intercept try off a wayward Warriors pass. The intercept sparked scenes of jubilation on the field for the visitors.
Talking Points
The Warriors' quick play-the-ball speed was effective in the first half, regularly catching the Bulldogs' defensive line out of position. However, they couldn't replicate that intensity in the second half.
Logan Spinks was the standout performer of the second half, scoring three second-half tries after being largely kept in check during the first 40 minutes.
Key Moment
Jonathan Sua's 90-metre intercept try midway through the second half was the moment that ended any faint hope of a Warriors comeback. With the Warriors pushing deep into Bulldogs territory looking for a way back into the game, Sua read the play perfectly snatching a pass and racing away untouched, leaving Warriors chasers helpless.
What's Next?
While the Bulldogs turn their attention to next weekend's NSWRL Regional Magic Round at Scully Park in Tamworth, the Warriors head to GIO Stadium in Round 16 to take on Canberra Raiders.
