The Newcastle Knights overcame a spirited Parramatta Eels outfit 26-22 in a thrilling opener to The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Regional Magic Round at Scully Park in Tamworth on Friday night, consolidating their place in the top four with an 11th win of the season.
The Knights wasted no time in establishing control, racing out to a 12-0 lead inside the first six minutes. Wilson De Courcey drew first blood in the second minute, finishing off a slick ball movement down the right edge after a set restart gave Newcastle an early platform. The try was converted by Connor Votano.
The Knights doubled their advantage moments later when a high kick from Matthew Hunter was allowed to bounce, Harrison Graham kept the play alive, and Kyle McCarthy pounced on a fortuitous bounce to score. Votano again converted the try.
Parramatta settled into the contest and gradually gained field position. Ryley Smith crossed from close range in the 26th minute, bouncing out of dummy half and spotting a gap to reduce the deficit to 12-6. Then, with just 47 seconds remaining in the first half, a clever flat pass from Jonah Pezet found captain Charlie Guymer, who crossed to level the scores at 12-all at half-time.
The Eels came out with intent in the second half. Richard Penisini produced an outstanding acrobatic finish in the corner to give Parramatta a 16-12 lead, before Matthew Arthur – fresh off the bench – linked with Tyson Gamble and Kyle McCarthy to bring the Knights level at 16-all. The conversion attempt struck the post, keeping the scores tied.
Saxon Pryke extended Parramatta's advantage to 22-16 thanks to a flowing team movement involving an Apa Twidle flick pass and Max Tupou's slick offload. However, the Knights responded immediately when an opportunistic try from Connor Votano – after Elijah Salesa-Leaumoana worked the ball to the right edge – closed the gap to 22-20.
Francis Manuleleua then delivered the decisive blow with four minutes remaining, shrugging off a defender after taking a short ball from Gamble to put the Knights in front 24-22 and ultimately 26-22 after the extras.
The Knights held firm defensively in the closing stages, repelling several Eels sets to run out four-point winners in front of a packed grandstand at Scully Park.
Talking Points
- The Knights' explosive start proved the difference – scoring twice inside six minutes from a set restart and a sharp kick-and-chase, a clinical opening that set the tone and ultimately gave them a buffer they needed when the Eels fought back.
- Ryley Smith was tireless for Parramatta, making metres from dummy half, setting up multiple attacking raids and contributing strongly in defence throughout the 80 minutes.
- The Eels' inability to convert pressure into points during lengthy first-half spells of possession was costly, with several promising sets near the Knights' try-line yielding nothing, allowing Newcastle to hold the lead at the break.
Key Moment
With the scores level at 22-all and six minutes remaining, Francis Manuleleua collected a short ball from Tyson Gamble, shrugged off a defender and crossed to put the Knights in front 24-22. It was the decisive blow the contest had been building towards, transforming a contest that could have gone either way into a Knights victory.
