Canberra Raiders produced a composed 34-16 victory over Warriors on a chilly Sunday afternoon at GIO Stadium, with halfback Coby Black steering the home side to victory in Round 17 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.
The opening exchanges saw both sides create early opportunities. Luke Metcalf's attempted pass ricocheted off Regan Carr handing Canberra good field position before Jye Linnane burst down the short side for the Warriors, only to be bundled into touch just metres from the line.
The Raiders made the visitors pay soon after. Hooker Shaun Packer darted out of dummy-half before finding Sione Finau pushing up through the middle. The winger burst clear in stride to race away and score beneath the posts giving the home side the perfect start.
A rare Canberra error from Jesse Milin invited the Warriors into attacking territory, but the opportunity disappeared almost immediately when Jett Cleary spilled the ball over his own line.
Black continued to dictate proceedings midway through the first half, launching a perfectly weighted cross-field kick towards the left corner. Kain Anderson climbed above the defence, wrestled his way to the ground and managed to free an arm to plant the ball despite heavy attention from the Warriors' defenders. Black converted to lead 12-0.
The Raiders' halves combination struck again just five minutes later. Black produced another pinpoint kick with a grubber off the outside of his boot into the in-goal, where prop Vena Patuki-Case won the race to the bouncing ball to help extend Canberra's advantage to 18-0.
The Warriors finally found a way onto the scoreboard late in the opening half. After Kayliss Fatialofa was held up over the line, the visitors shifted the ball on the following play as Daeon Amituanai finished the movement out wide. Metcalf was unable to convert as the Raiders took an 18-4 lead into the break.
The visitors emerged from the sheds with renewed energy and closed the margin almost immediately. Spotting tired markers around the ruck, Makaia Tafua darted through the middle before linking with Metcalf in support, who raced away to score and convert to the deficit to eight.
Momentum briefly swung towards the Warriors as they repeatedly threatened Canberra's line, but a crucial defensive play halted the comeback. Anderson intercepted a Warriors pass before linking with Ethan Alaia, whose long run set the Raiders on the attack. The ball was quickly shifted to Mark Tuialii who finished the movement to restore Canberra's buffer.
Black capped off an outstanding afternoon moments later with a try of his own. With the Warriors retreating the halfback dummied and skipped through the middle untouched to score beneath the posts, before calmly converting his own four-pointer and pushing the Raiders’ lead to 30-16.
Canberra's afternoon was tempered when both Jalen Afamasaga and Finau were forced from the field following a head clash while making a tackle, with both failing to return after undergoing a Head Injury Assessment (HIA).
The Raiders continued to capitalise despite the setback, with Anderson again creating the opportunity after taking on the line and producing a clever offload for Jayze Tuigamala to dive over for Canberra's sixth try.
The Warriors had the final say through Jacob Auloa, who crashed onto a short ball from Tafua to score late, but the Raiders comfortably saw out the closing stages to secure an impressive 34-16 victory.
