Western Suburbs Magpies produced a commanding second-half performance to demolish St. George Illawarra Dragons 42-8 in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Round 18. The Magpies, who entered the contest in eighth position, have now won three consecutive matches, keeping their finals aspirations firmly alive.
It was the Magpies who drew first blood inside the opening 10 minutes when confusion in the Dragons' in-goal left Fiohiva Siale Fainga’a with a simple finish, courtesy of a pinpoint kick from Latu Fainu. Javon Andrews converted to make it 6-0.
The Dragons showed plenty of enterprise throughout the first half and enjoyed the better of possession and territory, but they were unable to consistently convert that dominance into points. David Fale crossed for the Dragons to reduce the deficit to two, but a missed touchline conversion left the Dragons trailing 6-4.
The Magpies extended their advantage when Fainu burst from deep inside his own half, drawing defenders and releasing Andrews who coasted over for the second try. A Heath Mason conversion made it 12-4 before the Dragons hit back through Christian Tuipulotu, who finished off a slick left-edge movement involving Lyhkan King-Togia and Nathan Lawson. At half-time, the Magpies led 12-8, the game very much in the balance.
The second half belonged entirely to Western Suburbs. Heath Mason produced a brilliant chase off the back of an Andrews chip on the last to score untouched, catching the Dragons defence flat-footed. Andrews converted to push the lead to 18-8.
Fainu then produced the try of the match, kicking ahead for himself, regathering and grounding the ball in a moment of pure instinct that sent the Magpies out to a 24-8 lead. Shortly after, an attacking surge by the Dragons backfired spectacularly, with Magpies centre Fainga’a intercepting a pass to race downfield. A desperate defensive chase from Tyler Peckham-Harris saw Fainga’a fall just short of the try-line, but a quick shift to the left saw Junior Tupou score on the wing as the Magpies extended their lead, 30-8.
Solomone Saukuru extended the margin further after Mason's clever offload put him clear, before Mavrik Geyer put the finishing touches on the performance in the dying minutes, gathering a fortuitous bounce off Fainu's kick to score and complete a 42-8 rout.
Talking Points
- Magpies five eighth – Latu Fainu – was the standout player on the park. The Wests Tigers utility, unused in the NRL the previous evening, was electrifying every time he touched the ball and was the catalyst for several of the Magpies' best moments, including the try of the match.
- Solomone Saukuru crossed for his 15th try of the season, placing him among the competition's leading try scorers and underlining his outstanding form throughout the campaign.
- Tyler Peckham-Harris was the bright spot for a beaten Dragons outfit. The Dragons fullback was exceptional under the high ball and made several try-saving efforts, though his side's second-half errors proved too costly to over come.
- Javon Andrews was clinical with the boot, converting seven from seven attempts and finishing with 18 points for the afternoon – a match winning display from the Magpies halfback.
Key Moment
Fainu's audacious chip-and-chase try midway through the second half was the moment that broke the Dragons' spirit. With the Magpies leading 18-8, Fainu kicked ahead for himself, beat the cover defence, and grounded the ball – extending the lead to 16 points and ending any realistic hope of a Dragons comeback.
What's Next?
The Magpies return home to Lidcombe Oval next weekend to face the Warriors in what shapes as a crucial encounter for their top five push. For the Dragons, a bye will see them re-group before a Grand Final rematch against the Warriors in Round 20.
